Updated Support Items

Hey,

So the new support quests have been out for a little bit and I'd like to give my thoughts on them and maybe address some issues surrounding the Coin line specifically.

First up, I think the support quests are awesome! Riot has really been giving their Christmas presents early for us support mains, what with Rakan and all these flashy new quests. All this attention has definitely added a new depth to the support gameplay which is great to see. However, I'm a little bit confused with the direction that Riot took with reworking the Ancient Coin line to fit the new quests.

I understand the reasoning behind the pick-up mechanic, and I wholeheartedly support (heh) the way they implemented it to suit a better style of gameplay. It didn't really make sense to just stand around and make gold while the other two income items needed to actively earn gold through their respective means, and Riot have stated that one of their main reasons for changing the Favour passive was to introduce a risk-reward system to the Coin line like the other two items.

Cool, good job Rito! So you're trying to make item 3301 seem less brain-dead passive and more engaging, right? So why does the quest not really match up with the gameplay?

item 3302 and item 3303 both give very strong rewards for their quests that fit really well with how you earn the quests in the first place. The movement speed that you get from consuming a Tribute stack has a great amount of versatility that works well with the kind of champs that pick up the item, likewise for item 3302 since you can recharge the shield faster by executing minions. But the point in this being that these passives have relevance in combat situations like skirmishes and team fights. However, the quest earned from item 3301 doesn't have any real relevance in those same situations.

To be honest, the whole quest with item 3301 is very underwhelming. For me, the extra skill point usually just goes unnoticed, and the passive doesn't make sense. All you get from the passive is a little extra gold and mana from kills and assists, and if you're dead the mana is useless, but if you're alive it's not that much of a help since you get way more mana regen from items anyway. If I'm going to wait 15 - 20 minutes for my quest to complete then I want something that will actually give me a bit more of an edge in team fights.

The only champs that really ever get item 3301 are Soraka, Janna and Rakan, and since Riot removed the health back when minions die Soraka has been hit hard, especially since you have to go pick up the coins now which may be little bit too much risk for the reward considering the pick-up range. Rakan and Janna are pretty good with picking up the coins since they have the tools to deal with aggression, but Soraka has been given the short end of the stick. You might as well just get item 3303 since the passive works so much better with her, but that just means that you need to get a different item on Soraka out of necessity rather than playstyle, which is just bad game design.

I just think that you could do so much more with the item. Imagine if when you complete your quest the mana coin turned into a item 2009 or something that you could pick up off the ground which gave back health as well as mana. That could really work with Soraka since you'd be able to get a bit of health back mid-fight after a kill or assist to help with your healing. Or it could work on Rakan who could use the health after diving in and disrupting the enemy team. I mean, at least that makes sense for combat situations, and it's not like you'd have it all game since you only really complete the quests after 15 - 20 minutes which is when team fights usually start.

Anyway, those are just some of my thoughts and ideas. Feel free to add on to or rebuke them as you wish.
