Why did Dominion die?
I'll preface this by saying that I love Dominion, and I'm sad that Riot thinks this is the best choice. Not angry, just sad.
There are a bunch of theories going around as to why Dominion is dying (or has died, depending on your perspective). It's obviously a combination of a bunch of them, but I'm going to list all of the reasons I can think of. Why? Well, maybe seeing a breakdown like this will convince Riot to change their collective minds. But even if it doesn't, I think that everyone involved can learn from this.
- Lack of ranked. This, I think, is the biggest reason. Personally, I started playing less Dominion when JabeBot was disabled. It was a really good bot; allowing those who wanted Dominion to be competitive to be competitive while not forcing everyone to be. When it went down, I had a MMR of 1740, ranking me #6591 (top 5%). Ranked was promised for a while, and then it was "maybe". Never just "No", which might be why it lasted as long as it did.
- Lack of support. Huge balance issues like Kassadin and Kha'Zix took months to address, and bugs that would have been hotfix-worthy on SR also took months to fix. I mean, were it not for SR gaining a barrier at the start Azir would probably still be able to get out of the base immediately. But even when patches were biweekly (I can't recall if that was still happening when Dominion came out) I don't think that the Dominion community would have been upset with only one patch that affected Dominion every two or three patches. Dominion support was so sporadic that it usually felt like we were just getting the TT stuff that also happened to apply to Dominion.
- Removal of the Dominion-specific forum. This is what killed Dominate Dominion. I never played in the tournaments, or even watched them. But I know a large portion of the Dominion community did, and there was a sharp decline in interest in Dominion after that.
- Too small of a player base. Yeah, sure. But this one's a symptom, not a cause, IMO.
- Not well-suited to League champions. Nope. Not even close. Balance was only bad because of a few edge cases; never was there a time when there were fewer viable picks on Dominion than on SR. One guy could do that balancing, and did, for a while (Looking at you, ManWolfAxeBoss, and I think it was Riot Nome before that). Sure, there were some champions that nearly made it a 4v5 (Thresh had 0 stars on Sauron's tier lists for the longest time), but that wasn't a huge problem.
- Killing Draft Queue. Well, kind of. For those who don't know, for a time there was no penalty for dodging draft Dominion games. 2 weeks, IIRC. After that, draft queues never got below 10 minutes except on "Draft Day"s. It honestly would have been better if draft was just flat out removed.
So what now? Well, I have two things to say. What I want to happen, and (because I assume that it won't) what I think should happen.
What I want to happen:
- Replace both queues with one Blind Draft queue, and make it ranked.
- Develop better bot detection systems.
- Give Dominion its own board on the forums.
- Have some of the best dominion players put up tutorials on how to play, and put them on the front page.
- Get one person dedicated to balancing Dominion.
What I think should happen:
- Disable Dominion for a while.
- Bring it back after 3-6 months, and implement the things above. Bring it back as a test, and state explicitly what goals you have for it so that you don't remove it permanently. Stick to those goals, while ensuring it gets the support it needs to not have huge bugs.
- Don't worry about visuals; those can be redone if giving support to the map revives its community.
What do you guys think? Did I miss anything, or would anything else have to be done to revive the community?
