Should AD items be separated into ranged and melee?

My opinion is having all ad based champs share an item pool seems to be causing more balancing difficulties than necessary. It limits item build diversity because a lot of items that become powerful for melee champions can be abused by their ranged counterparts. This requires riot to have to balance each ad item based on 2 different use cases compared to one. Specific champs won't have to be nerfed as often because they can abuse a new item intended for the other class if champs. It could also open up riot to creating more unique passives like hurricane and hydra.

Separating the ranged and melee item could also make item purchases more logical. Instead of the long range sniper buying a bunch of swords and daggers to make her gun stronger she could buy better guns/holsters/aiming devices etc.. and the melee champs can use the swords and axes.

I would really like to hear everyone's opinions on this or any other ideas.

I suggested. Giving most items multiple passives and what passive you get from the item is dependent on your champion subclass

You'd have to increase the number of items available the complexity of the items all while reducing the build paths possible for each champion. It's better to adjust the champion that are abusing the item than to change the item itself unless the number of champions abusing said item is significant.

not unless they explicitly require melee or range to function like hydra or runaans

I can see what you are saying but consider how it effects assassins. With the recent assassin change lethality was added to help assassins out. It was then immediately abused by adc's that could abuse it causing it to be nerfed to the ground which hurt the assassins. A similar thing seems to be happening with blade of the ruined king.

It is still a good idea to have logical items. Swords, axes for melee. Wands, Staffs for mages, Bows guns ammo for ranged.
