Garen's Villain: when should it expire on "undead" champions?

I was playing around with Garen and his villain passive when I noticed that after killing a marked Karthus, the villain icon waited until after Karthus's ghost had disappeared to appoint a new villain. This got me thinking: is this intentional? Does it apply to other champions like Sion, Mordekaiser ghosts, Yorick, etc.? Just want some clarification here.

actually im kinda fine with it.

the villain mark has benefits against other champions in return. for example in shacos and leblancs case it marks the real one. clones dont get the mark right now. and against sions passive, mordes or yoricks ghost it can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the situation. the villain mark on sion helps bring him down faster when in undead mode, for example.

in karthus case its a clear disadvantage for garen, but it is what it is.
