Support is my secondary role, but I am probably a bit better than most Silver supports.
I started to improve after doing a few things.
- Create a "ward line" of vision after you build sightstone. Move the line up or back depending if you are winning or losing
- Get a sweeper after you have sightstone complete
- Place pink wards in locations that your team can contest. This does not simply meet placing the ward in a bush that is considered "safe." It means also placing the ward in corners or edges of bushes towards the the side of the map where your team is strong. For example if you are on Blue side there is a tri-bush. I place a pink ward in in the very corner of the bush closest to our base. If I am on red side I place it in the river bush closest to the lane.
- Do not die unless you dying gives your ADC a kill and not the opposing ADC a kill. So giving the kill to a support or jungler if you ADC secures a kill is worth if you die in the process. The bottom lane can get out of control very quickly after one kill if the ADC gets it. So avoiding early deaths is really important.
- Don't try to "make plays" in low Elo. Players will not respond every time and when they don't respond your life is in jeopardy. Once I began to use my skills to disengage and poke I began to improve significantly. Yes, I play more reactionary early, but I found that by waiting for an enemy mistake the lane is "safer" for both your ADC and you.
- Don't listen to your ADC early unless they seem competent. When level 3 Vayne targets a Draven for you to go in don't listen. Sometimes ignoring early ADC demands is simply better for the lane in low Elo. The supports dictate the tempo of the lane, get use to making calls and being autonomous early.
- I started playing supports with more "agency", and by this I mean supports that can: escape, deal damage (poke), and peel for themselves and the ADC. Once I stopped playing supports that could only do 2 of those 3 things well I began to die less (
,
, and
vs
,
,and
). I may just do better with more mobile poke champions vs tanks, but I began to have greater success in lower Elo making the change.
- Try to not fall behind in XP. This is hard you need to stay in lane for XP, but you also need to ward. Recognize the levels of the opponent and figure if you are behind. Usually if you and the the opposing support are around the same level you are OK, but you don't want a 3 level differential in the mid game.
