How To Be A Better Support

I am a rookie at being a support. Just reached level 30 and I am wondering how to be a better support. I heard that it is good to put up wards in the jungle and around the river and drakes to look out for enemies coming but what kind of wards do I need to purchase? and specific places where it is good and higher chance not to get spotted by the enemy?

Also, which types of support champions are good? Because so far, I have Lulu and Taric.

Well as a plat 4 support main my I can definitely tell you what I did to become better.

  1. Don't be a hero. A lot of the times you want to be there for your team, and a lot of the time you will most likely end up dying with them as a result. You have to be able to save yourself in all scenarios, if you cannot then don't go in to save them. This is different if you BOTH plan to stay in fight but always be ready to flash out if it feels like a lost cause.

  2. Don't be a one man band. This is something I had to learn getting out of silver. A lot of the times I would get frustrated with my ADC and I would try to go AP and just do it myself. Sometimes it works, and a lot of times it wont and leave you behind and tilted.

  3. Wards win wars. information is key to winning, and not just to your adc. If you can try to deep ward (only when its safe) or when your ADC leaves try to ward around mid. Being good to your team usually means they will help you in return.

  4. Ping often. If something doesn't feel right, ping for it. If someone is missing from your lane, I would def say do a ping every 10 seconds.

  5. Control the flow of your team. A lot of times your team will not listen to you (Fact of being a support) however they are like sharks so if they see blood in the water they will happily take it from you. So if you see a tower that needs protecting and there is a mass of minions, go to it. Someone on your team will go out of their way to do whatever it takes to make sure you get no CS. You can also do this in lane with your adc. If you need to a quick level 2, just poke the back line, your ADC will kill them fast just to spite you. So use that to your advantage. I personally like traditional supports but mostly Sona . At the end of the day, just pick what you like and become the best with it.

Sightstone and control wards from time to time. Once you get sightstone, switch out your warding trinket for a sweeping lens, then upgrade to oracle alteration once you hit level nine.

My favorite champs to go Support with are Alistar, Maokai, Braum, Nautilus, Blitzcrank, and Sona.

Alistar is a beefcake with a passive heal, hard CC on QWE, and an ult that makes him virtually unkillable. Maokai is primarily top lane or jungle, but I take him support. Free wards on E so you can start with red trinket, self-healing passive, hard CC on QW and R, plus huge chunking damage and slow on E. Braum has a great passive with a stun and chunking potential in most trades. Q is a long range, hard hitting slow, and being able to jump to an ally has its uses. The shield is also fantastic against most lane matchups - also, his ult is incredibly good for setting up plays. Nautilus is a beefcake with a passive stun on his first AA, giving him three forms of hard CC via passive, Q, and ult. Great meat shield with W shielding, long range hook and mobility if you hit terrain, and his ult is just beautiful for chasing, interrupting a team fight, or even running if you REALLY need it for that. Blitzcrank is primarily a hookbot. Hit your Q, E your target, and they're CC'd long enough to take a good chunk of damage if they don't die. W is good for chasing, passive is good if you get chunked out, and his ult is good for either burst or waveclear if you REALLY need that. Sona doesn't take much work to poke enemies in lane. Just hit Q and you'll watch their healthbars drain over time. She can also proc ardent censer in an AoE with her large heal, her speed boost is very valuable, and her ult can really change the flow of a teamfight.

Probably the best piece of advice you can get from [Hardstuck D5 Banana Main] me is -> Focus on not dying, or well... Focus on dying as little as possible.

IK, people will inevitably give you crap about not helping but if you judge out the situation and determine that your lane partner is doomed by his own mistake, running back in to save them only has a very slim chance of working out well... What will more likely happen is you'll end up donating extra 300g to enemy team which they can snowball against you. (This widely depends from situation to situation and skill levels of involved players)

Also, learning about Lvl 2 powerspike in bot lane was fundamental for getting me past Gold rank. Bot lane gets level 2 when the third MELEE creep from the second wave dies. (Assuming you didn't take too long leashing for jg and miss out exp from first wave in doing so) So auto the minions (But dont last hit them obv) from start of lane a bit. And then once you ding 2 use Ctrl + Q, W, E to rank up your second spell and look to take advantage of your opponents (who should still be lvl 1 if you do this right) with your Marksman.

Obviously, there is so much more to being better at supporting but getting laning basics down should be your priority if you want to climb past Gold rank.

The close you place wards in the enemy jungle nearest their nexus is optimal. Place wards in bushes so they will not think to scan them there.
