Why X champ gets so much hate
Keep in mind that I am not trying to antagonize anybody even though I might mention a few champs as an example. Neither am I trying to connect a complex issue to a single variable, but I am sure it CAN (read: not MUST) play a role.
I'm talking about very high play rates.
“But hey! That's a paradox.“, you say?
Well not necessarily. The fact that certain champs are strong or fun to play as (hence the high play rate) doesn't mean that people enjoy playing against these champs. It sure as hell doesn't mean that people enjoy playing against these champs OFTEN and sometimes in succession.
Take Lee Sin for example (reminder: this is not an OMGdeleteLeeSinNOskillweAreALLgoingtoDIE- post. I actually enjoy playing against Lee and I enjoy finding ways to counter his mobility. What I do not like is having to do just that in at least a third of my games. I have seen a few complaints on the boards about his RQQ combo. My point entails that this combo doesn't even need to be strong, the simple fact that we see it so often makes it extremely annoying.
But let's move this discussion away from Lee to a more general tone. The fact that certain champs are played (too) often also means that players are forced into similar gameplay patterns (too) often in order to deal with these champs. It means that we see the same thing/moves over and over again up to a point where we do not compliment skill but possibly react like“ Oh X champ just did THAT move.... AGAIN... this is so much fun“
And I don't think it is unreasonable that some people might not find that ideal. If you make an analogy with other sports/games, you might find that repetitiveness can create a negative emotional response.
However it's also important to realise that any notion to nerf/change champs with high play rates might not be based on objective facts, but on an emotion of not wanting to deal with X champ again.
I hope that I have been able to express my thoughts adequately and that people keep in mind that this post doesn't somehow try to explain it all.
Cheers
