Personally, I'm glad Riot decided to do something with Ranked fo preseason this year
When I say that, I don't mean that I think there's something wrong with Ranked. I say it because I think we need to get away from giant, overarching gameplay updates for a while.
You have all these threads about how Riot needs to nerf damage by 10% or just buff everything about turrets. However, I don't think it's that easy.
Doing stuff like that may sound good on paper, but you have to take into account the web of domino effects that could potentially take place that comes with those kinds of big changes. I feel like the better solution is to try to do it over several patches; perhaps over an entire season. Staying away from gameplay updates during preseason and midseason would allow for the option of making more progress throughout the year without having to worry about huge disruptions at fixed points. If we were to focus on things that don't actually impact how games are played, then the balance team could work more on smaller changes that slowly work toward fixing larger issues while having the space to observe the results of those changes to see what direction they need to go in next.
I think that Riot has set themselves up for a great opportunity, here. I just made this post to express my hopes that they don't waste it.
