[Major Fix] BANS and MODE DIFFICULTIES
So for this discussion, I will be hitting two topics. The first one being bans, relating to Riot's ideas for "interesting gameplay" and the need for "strategic diversity" on teams. Please note that by "bans", this is not referring to the player punishment system, I am referring to the ban phase of draft and ranked games.
Riot complains that we do not have enough "strategic diversity" and "effective counterplay", which is one of the reasons things are done the way they are--for example, the recent removal of the DFG we all know. So it is obvious that these are core issues to be addressed. Now then, in ranked (and draft) gameplay, there are THREE (3) bans for each team...this is LUDICROUS (crazy)!!! Let me take you back to Season One. By the end of Season One there were 6 bans total. There were 81 champions (I did the math: 16 Alpha-release champions + 23 Beta-release champions + 14 Pre-season One champions + 28 Season One champions) At the time that ranked came out, there were a total of 55 champions and 4 bans total. Mathematically speaking, this was a ban of approximately 7% of the champions (technically that is 7 and 3/11 [three-elevenths])(4 × 100 = 400; 400 ÷ 55 = 7.27 repeating, or 7 and 3/11). Theoretically speaking, this meant that Riot allowed themselves to have a 7% margin-of-error--i.e.: we got these guys wrong in balancing and we understand your disdain playing against them competitively so you do not have to, should your captain choose to. By the end of Season One (August 23rd, 2011), the number of bans had been increase to 6, and the champion pool had been increased by 26. Once again, doing the math we will look at Riot's margin-of-error that they gave their developers. This time there was a ban of AGAIN...approximately 7% of the champions (technically speaking, this was 7.407 repeating...or 7 and 11/27 [eleven-twenty-sevenths])(6 × 100 = 600; 600 ÷ 81 = 7.407 repeating). Now let's come up to date as of today...there are now a WHOPPING 123 champions...and. still. SIX. BANS!!!! This is bringing Riot's margin-of-error to DANGEROUSLY low levels, as it incorrectly reflects design flaws! Again, I will do the math to determine the actual number. As we start season five, we can ban literally only a 5% of our champion pool. This is outrageous, as it is well known that there are more than 5% of our champions that have major balancing issues right now. Doing the math, we should have a total of 9 bans (technically 8.89) (7% × 123 = 8.89 ≈ 9). This would also open up more strategic diversity on the Fields of Justice. I could also argue that bans should be directly proportionate to the number of champions we have, as opposed to an allowed margin of error. In this case we will see if it would significantly change the number of bans. Allow me to elaborate. If we had 4 bans for the original 55 champions in ranked, going up to 6 bans when the champion pool hit 81 at the end of Season One, then with today's 123 champions at the end of Season 4, we should have a total of (6 × 123) ÷ 81 = 9.1 ≈ 9. So as we can see, even doing the math this other way still gives us 9 as a result. There is no reason to think that Riot has reduced their margin of error. Riot please do not give credit where credit is not due.
Now allow me to introduce a new concept: Game "Mode Difficulty". What would this be? Well simply put, this would separate out the serious players from those who simply wish to play for fun/to troll. When someone hits level 30 and has the 14 required champions, they should be displayed a screen similar to what was displayed when you very first start an account at level one. A choice of your desired game-type though, instead of a choice of your "experience with MOBAs". The first option would be "Casual Player", the second option would be "Competitive Player". A "Casual Player" would be able to do ranked...but a different ranked system than the Competitive counter-part. This ranked system would simply be a fun way of determining who was better. A "Competitive Player" would go into a ranked system like the one we have now is *supposed* to be. It would be more of the "sport" side of League than the "game" side of League. We know that we in ranked ALL have those games where there are those feeding, annoying people that don't really care. They just say, "Ohhh it's just a game stfu", "What's your problem dude, it's a gaaaaaaame.", etcetera. These people are okay in normal/unranked games...but are a genuine pain in the butt in Ranked games. It's not the fact that they feed...everyone everywhere has bad games at time...it is their attitude that separates them out. They have no inner-flame of getting better. They do not belong in a competitive system. It should also be that people could be moved from the Competitive Mode down to the Casual Mode after getting a number of a certain type of report (reports such as Unskilled and Leaving the Game/AFK). At this point, these players should be kept in Casual Mode for a timed period where they would be unable to go back to Competitive for a little while. Once this occurs, it would be apparent that many times players this happened to would desire to stay in the Casual Mode--as it would be loads more laid back (even in Ranked) than in the Competitive counter-part. These players should get the same rewards and treatment from Riot as Competitive ones as well. These two modes would NOT be to "punish" anyone, but rather to IMPROVE THE OVERALL GAMING EXPERIENCE OF PLAYERS. Players wishing to get better could even use the Casual Mode to begin learning how to be a better player that would be able to competitively battle. If someone wanted to transition from Casual to Competitive there would be an option to do so from their "User Profile" (which would be grayed out if they were recently forced down to Casual for *x* amount of time), After selecting to go Competitive, these players should be shown a screen confirming their choice and explaining the differences. After clicking "accept", then these players would be given the option to either "Re-do My Placements" (only available once per season, regardless of promotion to/demotion from Competitive Mode, to prevent abuse) or "Start In My Current League". This is an "alpha-stage" idea, and is open to new suggestions and ideas that may make it better.
These two ideas would solve a multiplicity of problems with ease and therefore should be implemented. Out of these two ideas, the most important one for now is regarding the banning phase of Ranked and Draft games.
