Chat restriction - as a tool rather then a punishment

I recently got chat restricted, frankly because I was being an asshole - totally deserved it. Whats scary is, it actually helped my games go smoother for the most part. Here is what I was an asshole about (this isn't an excuse, just an illustration of why I think chat restriction is a good thing). Someone on my team would start blaming myself or others for losing their lane or questioning why I flashed in to get a stun off and ended up dying. I would explain myself, then be told I was a scrub - or be told I needed to learn mechanics, or any number of other instigating remarks. Rather then being an adult about it, I retaliated in chat, called them morons, dumbasses, I would highlight the fact that I was 1/1/10 and they were 1/10/1 and basically just crush them verbally. This led to a LOT of threats of reports, where I would call them crybabies, ask them if they wanted a tissue, told them their mom was over my house if they wanted a shoulder to cry on, basically I was a complete ass - which turned those threats of reports into actual reports. I DESERVED the chat restriction - and probably more.

What the chat restriction showed me was:

  1. My words had to be chosen carefully. Therefore I had to choose what was most appropriate to let my team know my intentions, text or pings. I found myself using pings more effectively rather then writing a paragraph to tell mid I was on my way to help gank his lane. If typing was required, it was more concise - i.e. in a recent game I played Annie with, I simply typed "clear the minion wave and ill flash stun" - he did, and we got the double kill.

  2. The toxicity was pretty much removed from the game. Not because I couldn't type, but because I only had limited chat lines and didn't want to waste them replying to someone asking me what I was thinking, or why I was bot when top was being ganked, or why I built the way I did.

  3. Communication (at least from my perspective) in my matchmade games was much better because I didn't have to worry myself about toxic players. Yes there were a few - but replying to them only tends to feed the fire - so I simply didn't reply to them.

So my suggestion would be - limit the team chat in matchmade games, but leave /all chat unrestricted. Maybe not as severely as the current chat restriction is, but I do believe that some restriction would actually help reduce toxicity rather then waiting until someone becomes toxic enough that requires a chat restriction. Instead of starting with only 3 lines of chat, have people start with 5. Instead of limiting the max to 5, limit it to 10 - and allow 1 additional line per minute.

I personally think limiting team chat and leaving /all chat unrestricted will allow teams to better communicate using pings, but also communicate their intentions via team chat rather then using team chat to berate their teammates (or reply to players berating their teammates). /all chat being unrestricted still leaves room for toxicity; however /all chat by default is off (at least it was when I started playing - I was level 20 before I realized there was even an /all chat) which means most new players won't even see the toxicity in /all chat, and those that do see it will be on both teams rather then someone from the team with the toxic player having to type in /all chat "report this jinx for being toxic" - something I see all to often in games. For those of you confused and thinking this would actually HINDER team play rather then improve it, I never once needed more lines then I was given - and I even found myself thinking that the chat restriction was a bit too lenient because I found myself at the max of 5 lines more often then not, and after the first couple of games, I never actually hit the limit.

Now yes, I was an ass, and yes I deserved the chat restriction. Thing is, it actually helped me communicate better - and I actually LIKED it. I think chat being restricted for everyone would actually help reduce the amount of toxicity in the community, highlight those players who join games just to troll their teams, and reduce the amount of games where one person is being blamed for "feeding" because they gave up first blood 1 minute into the game.

Just my thoughts.

The reason they restrict /all chat is that players with access to all chat show toxicity around 30% more of the time. Riot did a study in like 2012. What happened to you, being introspective about what you say, is in fact the intention of the system. They said it themselves in the dev blog, they wanted chat to be a limited resource to force that reaction.

That said, not everyone does have that response. I'm just as toxic with my words with it. I'll sooner tell my mid laner he's stupid than explain to my Blitzcrank why "I need farm" meant that he needs to position properly so I won't get jumped on for going near the CS, not that he shouldn't hook people.
