Change to item building!!

So I was thinking about it and, at least for as well as I can remember, every tier one item that you buy that builds into something always has its stats or effects carried over in some way.

You buy a tier one item that's going to give you AD and you know the tier two item it builds into is also going to give you AD.

I was thinking, what if there were a few tier two and tier three items that didn't carry over stats from a previous lower tier item, but instead replaced the stat with some other stat.

this way a player might be able to buy stats they need in a panic while allowing them to upgrade those stats into something different if the current game now calls for it.

Ok here's another idea. What if all items were put into categories. Items can overlap each others categories, that's fine.

Now if you want a tier two item, you must buy its worth in gold of tier one items of the same category.

These would only be useful in certain situations that would cause whoever used them to not scale correctly around when they were using them.

Methinks this idea defeats the purpose of committing to an itemization. If you could build tanky stats in a pinch, say, a Cloth Armor to help you against an AD laner, and then build that into a Deathcap or Infinity Edge later on, then there's little incentive for anyone to take risks with their builds.

As it is now, if you want to build a particular stat in a particular situation, you'll have to delay your core build to do so. Without that drawback, there's no strategic value to choosing defense over offense or vice versa... it wouldn't make a difference either way, because you could simply trade one stat for another with no loss in gold efficiency.

A few select items sort of follow this line of thinking already. For example you pick up Quicksilver Sash for a defensive reason, but it's two full build items are primarily offensive. the new ZZrot portal has very similar stats and build path as GA but is also an offense geared tool. They keep the stats, because that's really the only thing that makes sense, but the low tier items have a wide variety of end points, even if they're defense or offense through passives and actives.
