Debating Dyrus's Tweet.

So this year after reaching challenger again, Dyrus took the decision to add a bit more variety to what he wants to play instead of endlessly grinding league without really having fun, And this made me think for a moment.

If even reaching the top still gets you unsatisfied, what would ? What's the point of getting high up in the ranks and being good at the game when at the end it might just be pixels on a screen that means alot to others but does not appeal to you that much personally anymore.

Dyrus's case is different as he already has been in the LCS and he's currently retired so anyone reaching that point might be interested in going even higher to get into the competitive scene, which i can tell is the objective and goal of many, but most importantly mine as well. And when I think about it it's right, no matter where we get we will never satisfy our desire to go higher. I remember back in the day when I was bronze I wanted to get silver I told myself it would just satisfy my to be silver but i had the desire to go even higher and so when I got to gold, the same thing happened.

Now i'm sitting at platinum having the resolve, the will and the dream of getting into pro play one day, i'm still far and I have a long way to go, but I have time to grind, and the will and desire to achieve what I want to achieve. But after thinking about Dyrus's tweet for a moment I asked myself wether i would enjoy one day achieving that or not, I felt like the idea of having a variety of games to play, friends to play with was more appealing to me than just sitting on a computer grinding for a dream, I tried doing both but that doesn't work at all.

I've been playing League of Legends since mid-season 2 and I've always loved it, I've seen it change over the past couple of years and then I thought to myself maybe the game just changed and turned out to be way different from what I thought it would end up being.. which is sad really. I can name a few serious issues that the game had for a while but that got fixed later on, but now it feels as if the gameplay is not as appealing as it was before.. Maybe i'm just losing the magic or the fun that I've always had playing league of legends due to losing alot recently and the game changing ? Am I the only one in this ? This situation is putting me at a point where i'm reconsidering what I want to do while I never wanted to look back.

At this point i'm losing my reflex of opening League of Legends as the first thing I do after launching my computer, Now i just hover my mouse over the icon wondering wether i want to play or not, and i end up just playing something else instead and I don't know why that is happening. Maybe I just got worse at the game and i've lost interest ?

What are your thoughts on getting really high elo ? What do you guys think ? Is it worth it spending all the ressources nessecary to get there without being sure of what you want ? Or is it just better to try and have fun in some others video games ?

Thanks for reading ! I feel really lost so I really want your opinions on this..

This is less the downside of high elo, or even of this game. This is simply the nature of "ambitious dreams" in general--it might happen in your thirties or your seventies, but the death of your drive and motivation is something that comes to us all. There is a reason why most people's final regret on their deathbed is not having spent enough time with their family or having mistreated someone important in their lives.

If I were to be shown this game, in it's current state, for the first time I would not fall in love with it the way I did back in Season 1. It feels like a tarnished and disjointed version of the original.

There are going to be people that lose interest in a game that is nine years old, but that's not really the biggest issue that League has right now. The primary problem is that the game plays completely differently than it used to----and these changes, outside of a few exceptions, haven't been for the better. We all know the problems that League has right now.

  • Damage is too high
  • Snowballing occurs too easily and often
  • Games play too fast (less than 25 minutes in many cases)
  • Outcomes are determined by around 10 minutes
  • Toxic community, combined with marginal game balance makes for unsatisfying wins and extraordinarily disheartening losses
  • Rotating Game Mode gone, URF never returning

And of course the other issues with the game right now too that are somewhat more peripheral

  • Runes Reforged, while offering interesting choices, really comes down to which runes provide the most damage in the shortest amount of time
  • Blue Essence system is inferior to the previous version (with the exception that it is free).
  • Because of BE changes, winning games now feels unsatisfying as there is no post-game reward
  • Orange Essence values have been nerfed to the point where it seems unrewarding to earn anything.
  • Riot generally ignores even the most legitimate gameplay discussions that revolve around massive issues that the community has... their communication in general is at an all-time low.

-- So, I can understand why people have lost their passion for this game, because it's happened to me. I've written this same post (or similar version thereof) over the last several weeks and I think the only reason I stay is because I operate under the delusion that Riot will fix the game in this eleventh hour before I decide to just leave for good.

Just like with any aspect of life----once I decide that I'm done, that's it... there's no coming back and I'm sitting right at that edge right now and it's so sad to think about. I had a lot of fun in this game and I really think that if Riot could address the above issues many people would stay and posts like this would be very few and far between.

While I assume a lot of people are going to go into "Omg its because rito and lol sucks now bring season 3 back", I believe it's a different issue here.

Dyrus has already peaked in what he could do, he is what people "affectionately" call a washed up pro, that has to hit you in a way, and right now getting to Challenger is more of a personal requiriment rather than an achievement for these players, so figures that after a few years it can begin grating him. And even more considering that he's somewhat pressured into playing League because he's a League streamer.

So yeah, play whatever you want, Dyrus!

Do what you want. That's pretty much it.

If you wanna have fun have fun. If you wanna climb climb.

If you aren't having fun while climbing, decide if you wanna continue a no-fun climb for the sake of the glory or stop the climb and go do something more fun.

All depends on what you value more, as long as you're interested and invested in what you're doing.

I wouldn't consider either choice a waste of time.

He started playing this game before the front of his brain had finished developing. Now he can think long term more realistically and evaluate and reflect. He is learning.

LoL as a full time job? Maybe, but boring and it goes nowhere as an adult for 99% of even pro players. It's also draining his health by sitting in a chair all day. This guy has the physical prowess of a 40-50 year old.

I might be reading too much into it but it sounds like ur just growing up.

May I ask your age? Im legit interested and I hope its not too personal. Even an approximation would be fine.
