The problem of climbing in ranked

If you play one match and win, great you won a match. If you go for 2 and lose, now you have to play a third to be up one match. And if you lose that now you are down and have to play 1 more to win and be even for the day or 2 more and win both and be up 1 match for the game.

So suddenly you need to play 5 matches just to be up one match for the day.
