Matchmaking system needs work.
Not too sure what the algorithm is, but more often than not I get at least 1 person in my game who doesn't come near to my skill level. I don't blame them, I blame the algorithm. A billion dollar a year company should be able to get this right. Maybe there are more ideas being worked on at the moment, I don't know, but for right now the games I get are extremely frustrating.
Ranked Not anywhere near as bad as normals and I think a lot of the new stuff will make it a lot better. The new stuff does not touch up on stuff like map awareness, warding, ward placements, resource hogging, disconnected players, and all those small details that not only make you a good player, but a dependable teammate. Player 1, 2 ,3 , and 4 could be playing a solid game, but player 5 is 0/2/0 in the top lane at 6 minutes and tilted as hell because the player wasn't wise enough to take it easy until he got a gank to catch him back up after the first death. Top lane snowballs out of control faster than any lane of yours can keep up and the game is more than likely lost.
The algorithm has found a way to keep the majority of the players win % around 50%, but not a good job at keeping players of similar skill levels where they belong in the ranking system. I feel like the biggest flaw is that the reward or penalty is dependent on a win or a loss. Unless all the players on the team performed similarly, the reward or penalty should not be similar. If you have the technology to see hotspots of warding in worlds, then I would assume you have all the necessary kind of data needed to determine whether or not a player is gosu, expert, good, alright, or noob.
Normals I'm not sure how the majority of players take normals, but I take them just as serious as ranked matches. I want to win the game just as bad and want my forced 20+ minutes of effort to be just as rewarding. At least give me a good game. A good game lost is not a loss.
We can take different scenarios into consideration such as practicing a new champ, practicing to get better for your ranked matches, or just playing for fun with no care about the outcome at any point of the game at all (I don't understand these people, but they exist). Details that can help you match with people just like you with a similar skill level. An accurate ranking system of individual skill, an accurate ranking system of the champ you are playing, and maybe a competitive or casual game mode. Individual skill and champ skill should go hand in hand.
For example I am plat 5 with a Heimerdinger with 489k mastery points. When I go to normals I want to be able to play with people at my level or at least a little higher so I can get better. If I pick Heimerdinger in a normals match, I pretty much roll over the team. It gets boring, and it doesn't help me improve in lane against a similarly skilled laner. If I go in with friends of a lower rank, I don't want you throwing in a level 22 on my team to "balance" the game. Put the level 22 where he belongs, with other level 22s.
On the flipside, if I want to learn Gnar or Lee Sin like I have wanted to lately, don't throw me in with a level 22 and expect me to "balance" him out with my Bronze 5 Lee Sin. Also, don't match me against a Plat 5 Fiora to practice my Bronze 5 Gnar.
This is what I would need as a player or mute all players in my game and take away all my communication because almost every game you match me with at least one person who blows my mind with the decisions they make in game. Rant over
