Normal Queues

So I've been lurking for awhile and seeing long comment threads everywhere with people complaining about various queues, autofill, etc. So I figured I'd add my thoughts. Let me be clear: this post contains my opinions that I hope may function as a starting point for a constructive discussion on the matter. I don't claim to know or be right about everything, and look forward to hearing other peoples thoughts.

Firstly, from a comment I read somewhere (sorry, I don't recall the summoner name!), blind pick is an absolute disaster and should be removed. The only thing good about blind pick is the short queue times, but even that is overshadowed by extreme toxicity and inconsiderate actions like autolocking. Granted, I do not personally play blind pick so perhaps someone with more experience with this game mode could enlighten me on any other positive aspects?

With that out of the way, the main point I wanted to discuss was regarding role-selecting queues like modern draft and teambuilder, along with the carrot/stick approach.

Now, I was a fan of teambuilder. It certainly had its faults - long queues, play meta or get kicked, etc. - but what I appreciated about it most was choice. It gave you the option to pick short queue times by playing a particular role, or wait for the role you wanted. I believe this is the element of teambuilder that make people remember it fondly over the current draft pick. I propose the following solution: don't bring back teambuilder, but let people 1, 2, 3, 4, or all 5 roles in draft and don't autofill. Why? Because it let's people choose which roles they're willing to play and set their own balance between role preference and queie time. Want a shorter queue? Pick more roles you're willing to play. Want a particular role regardless of how long it'll take to get? Great, you can do that too. I believe having this choice available will make people happier, which just leaves us with one problem: queue times.

To fix queue times right now, Riot is using a stick from the carrot/stick anology with autofill. It is essentially a threat: if the unpopular roles aren't filled, you'll get saddled with a role you don't want for the next 20+ minutes or you can take a dodge ban. Players don't like being punished for something they have limited control over in games. So my solution is to reward them: if a particular role is holding up matchmaking because there aren't enough people queued for it, offer a small reward (like a small IP boost) for players joining the queue as that role. It could show up much like the current queue time indicators: "If you queue for this role, you'll get an ip boost at the end of the match". This approach turns the thought process from negative ("if I don't I could be punished") to positive ("if I do, I will be rewarded"). This would hopefully incentivize people to queue as less popular roles (particularly at low elo where support is rare and people need IP for champions), this reducing queue times.

Anyway, those are my ideas. What are your thoughts on the matter?

tl;dr: Blind pick is bad. Let people choose between preferred role with long queue time or flexible role with short queue time. Offer ip boost (or similar) for queuing as unpopular role.
