Loss prevented?

How does the actual system work? is it based on riot servers themselves or is it a player system? Just came out of a ranked game with a dc or an afk (not really sure which, but he left the game) was just wondering in that situation could the loss have been prevented in anyway because the rest of the team fought a 4v5 for 20 mins ish and didnt really deserve to lose LP because of one guy.
