Why even kit?

while this hasn't been to much of a problem till now the new support items just throw this into stark relief. why even bother with kits anymore? Frost queen's, locket, redemption not only give a support some ability power and quite a bit of tankyness but oh you also get; a ranged slow, a big shield, and an aoe heal/damage on top of what ever your champion is allowed/supposed to do.

now i realize tweaking kits is time consuming and a pain and just fixing a broad item is easier than individual champs but come on riot. you update kits to provide more distinction between champs then come out with items that completely override that distinction. you can build above on any support and they are more supporty than any other build combo. it doesn't stop with supports they're just the current great offender. all ap burst now build ludens/protobelt because since magic pen nerf they can't get the burst they need from their kit so you throw in an active rather than looking at a case by case fix/buff.

another example. Nunu. he used to be confined by the fact he had one real source of damage (ok two, but you don't get your ult as often as e). now you throw a GLP and a Titanic on him and he has a huge boost in damage despite how his kit was built to prevent that and focus more on timing and skill (or just jungling). now i like Titanic, but it's predecessor, atma's, was a lot harder to abuse (consistent damage instead of a active burst) and more tactical (Frozen mallet, atma's trist) to allow non tanks to get still get some damage out even if they had to build different depending on the circumstance.

i see this problem snowballing as yes it is much easier to create and maintain an single item rather than all you various champs but were does it end? will all builds be nothing but actives in season 10 and kits are superfluous? so as i have before i suggest a roll back. now rolling back the champs is obviously too hard to get right, but items, creep and turret stats, and everything else shouldn't be too hard.

a roll back (especially as a rolling game type) to season 2 will let you all see and evaluate how we used to do things like ap burst and support and bruiser and jungle before you gave us all these pat-on-the-back easy fix items. how skill and kit use to matter as much or more than what you built. it may also bring up some new-but-not-improved things (kogmaw anyone?) that you may want to bring back because they did work better before. this charging ahead with patchwork heat of the moment fixes is starting to change some fundamentals in this game because they get stacked on each other until you don't even know what the original problem they were meant to fix was. now i don't think stagnation and denying a game the chance to evolve and change is a good thing, but i do always ask myself "is this really better?" or "is this really the direction they want to head in?"

i truly think a roll back would help everybody (pro, casual, and creator alike) answer these questions and point out some flaws that worked as a heat of the moment fix but now have created more problems than were expected.

You're making one fatal flaw -- you assume that balance is the number one priority for the game and for Riot. That's simply not the case; balance is a result of trying new ideas and is something that is necessary for the game to be playable but not the #1 priority.

The top priority is to make the game fun and prevent it from being stale. As the population becomes more and more accustomed to the game play; it's forced to evolve and give more complex options and continuous change to retain players. This results in more complex champions (who are a lot more fun to play) and a greater breadth of items which offers more diversity.
