"How Great Games Beat the Grind"

In this video, one of the highlighted ideas is that great games beat grind by giving players a sense of progression.

League Balance Team totally destroys this for players, in a polarizing way.

(This post has little to do with the video)

Since the team is constantly reworking, changing, altering, revamping, transforming, "balancing" the game, players are forcibly split into two cardinal groups:

Players who can keep up with the fast-paced two-week patches. Players who can't.

And even among the first group, the community is split yet again:
Players who enjoy constantly adapting to Riot's ever-changing game. Players who just want to play the damn game.

To players who fall into the first category of BOTH splits, the game is probably awesome. As this consists mostly of kids with free time, as well as Riot's dedicated playerbase, on the surface there might not seem to be a problem

But to any other 3 out of the 4 categories, the sense of progression in skill may be hindered as frequently as every 2 weeks (26 times a year). Players feel like they get another rug pulled out from under them every time they get back up.

I'm NOT saying Riot should cater to the lazy, or uninformed, hell no.

But one thing Riot has ignored for the longest time is game feel (I'd say ever since Season 3, newer players say Season 4, 5, 6, 7, whatever. Whichever season they first got burned too hard from all the rugs pulled out from under them).

In an effort to achieve statistical balance seemingly at any cost, they've ruined the game feel. Every time a champion gets reworked, some of their most dedicated players get a rug pulled out from underneath. Every time a new item gets introduced, or a champion is seemingly unnecessarily buffed -or- nerfed, some players will feel like everything they ever knew has crumbled down and they have to spend their time learning the game over again, rather than just enjoying the game they already spent 2, 4, 8 years "learning".

And again, SOME PEOPLE LIKE THIS. Riot caters to player who LOVE adapting. But with every change, the game becomes increasingly more grating to those who don't care for it.

To me, the League of Legends balance system is like playing a fistfight Battle Royale in a big room. And every 2 seconds the room's floor jerks to the side suddenly, knocking everyone to the ground. Some of the people in the room spring right back up every time and start pounding away, but others who take a little longer stand up only to get knocked right back down before they can throw a good punch. And that goes on for several minutes. Hours. Eventually people hit their head on the ground too many times without being able to even throw a punch, get frustrated and just tap out. And by tap out I mean just kind of lie down and linger there, wonder why you even play this dumb game, get up after a minute, get immediately punched and knocked over again, and then go "oh yeah that's why I stopped getting up".

Sorry if I rambled (I definitely rambled). That's just what I do.

I'm too illiterate to read the whole post but I just want to say that that's a really cool video and I enjoyed watching it.
