all items in the game can be upgraded. so why not do that for the doran gear? here is my idea.

dorans blade to dorans spear

70 hp to 300 hp 7 ad to 50 ad 3% lifesteal to 10%

dorans shield to dorans armor

80 hp to 400hp 6 hp per 5 sec to 1% max hp per 5 sec block 8 damage from basic attacks and single target abilities to damage is reduced by 1% of max hp (maybe lower)

dorans ring to dorans amulet

60 hp to 200 hp 15 ap to 50 ap 3 mana per 5 sec to 1% max mana per 5 sec 4 mana restored on killing a unit to 35 on unit kill

what do you think? im sure unique passives in there too lol but sounds fun

Dorans items exist to give players an option to delay buying items that can be upgraded in exchange for a powerful early start. They are extremely cost efficient to the point where if they upgraded into anything worthwhile literally everyone would only buy dorans items at the start of the game.

Hell, as it is if you're behind you can stack dorans rings or dorans blades and suddenly be able to match your enemy laner in power if only one or two kils behind - with the caveat that if you don't manage to turn the tables you will fall massively behind (even more so than if you had not bought dorans and passively farmed) because dorans don't upgrade and sell back to the shop for like 1/4 their purchase cost.

TLDR: the whole point of dorans items is that they don't upgrade and are allowed to be cheap and super effective because they don't upgrade.

What is the difference between upgrading Doran's vs buying an item? You are still spending gold. I am not sure what the point of making upgrades for them would be. The purpose of the Dorans line is for a safe start. Many players confident in their early game skip Dorans altogether.
