I am bad at League of Legends

The Wet Baguette·12/30/2015, 4:03:18 PM·9 votes·3,127 views

Now, it's not like I play a lot of ranked, but I am bronze 1.

I don't think I deserve to be any higher than I am.

But I want to learn to be better.

Every forum I find on this topic says that bronze players don't know how to play the game. Objectives, mechanics, positioning...

What the forums don't say is how to play the game.

What should I do to get better?

And please don't say "play the game more." That's a given. I know that.

Thank you.

There are literally thousands of things one can do to improve and get better at the game. Start by setting reasonable goals for your self to improve upon.

Trying to all ways get a minimum of 100cs by 13 minutes. Just being able to CS can help you win more games, because more cs=more gold. You don't all ways need to kill your lane opponent in order to win.

Learn to ward and when the best time it is to ward. If you just saw the enemy jungler and mid laner in the top lane it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to waste a trinket ward on the bot river bush at that moment in time, but I see people do this and by time the enemy jungler makes it to bot for the gank their ward is gone and they need to back or they died.

Have a good champion pool so you can play all roles in the game decently enough so when your not in your main role you can still contribute to the over all game play. This can also be a double-edged sword. I've seen people have a nice champion pool but they play so many champions they haven't mastered any.

If your losing in your lane don't just sit in lane and be useless not collecting any cs, especially if the enemy laner has it froze or is zoning you hard. Go roam or ward the enemy jungle do something don't just waste time.

Learn how to properly build and when to pick up certain items and when not to. For example, let say your the ADC and your constatnly getting caught out and dying to lux. Lux is all ways landing that damn Q on you. Building more damage isn't going to ave you from that combo but getting a item 3140 or item 3102 can save you from that deadly snare.

Look at the mini map every 10-20 seconds minimum. If someone doesn't call an MIA then it is up to you to look at the mini map and see who is missing.

There is so much more I could put here but I'll leave it as is for now. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

The only other point I want to add is Never blame other peopel for your loss. All ways take every loss as your fault and ask your self what you could have done better? There is all ways something to improve on even when you don't think there is. That is also why recording your games can help a lot to.

  1. CS better. High 80, 90+% cs rates help a lot.
  2. Positioning.
  3. Objectives and when to get them. For example, first dragon is before level 8 or you're doing something wrong.
  4. DON'T FEED. This is under 5 deaths in a GAME. 5 Deaths x 5 Players x 300 gold = 7500 gold (not counting assist gold). Tell me, How well could you do against someone with TWO extra items?
  5. Ward... Ward... ward... ward....
  6. Did I mention to Ward?
  7. JUST WARD ALREADY!
  8. Counter ward / Roaming ganks
  9. Lane Freezing and when to give up the first tower.
  10. Elixirs - Get them, PLEASE. It's worth the gold.

Work on all that, watch videos. Mobafire.com and sites like them work well too.

Record your games, catch yourself making mistakes and spend the next one trying to eliminate whatever causes it from your autopilot routine by being more aware of yourself and your actions while laning or teamfighting.

Learn the powerspikes of your champion, this is key to the laning phase. What levels are good to fight, and their matchup. Watch the minimap.

Understand the game. Like, think critically about it. Why do people say play around objectives rather than kills? Mostly because objectives can't run away and give sure bonuses. Kills are an iffy thing at the best of times. But really the key to winning the game is getting a gold lead, which means resource control. Controlling the map, and lanes and the neutral camps and the objectives, means developing a gold lead and getting ahead without ever risking combat. It also means that if you know your powerspikes, you can press your advantage with objectives, because the enemy must fight or cede them.

That said, most soloQ games are decided by kills anyway, because that's how people get the gold to snowball.

Early game in a lane you want to take control of access to the wave and then punish an opponent who tries to farm. You can kill them if you get enough harass going and they misposition. Be dominant in a lane. Midgame, it is often a matter of choosing your battles wisely. Don't chase after champions that are more mobile than you. Fight with superior numbers. Out rotate your opponent on the map - which means wards, mobility, and a general sense of where your opponent is going. Late game, grouping is exceedingly important. The basics of teamfighting is to CC someone on the enemy team and focus them, and then the next target. Carries position safely, tanks either CC the target or CC enemies that go after the carries. Targetting the tank is not wrong, if thats whats available on the enemy team. It is more important to position safely yourself than to dive the enemy damage dealer. Usually. And its all chaos in soloQ anyway.

Play ranked. U won't climb if u dont rank. Normals aren't the optimal place to learn the game, unless ur just practicing mechanics. Also, play to get better, not to rank up. That comes in time

I find Youtube Instructional videos help me alot weather learning more about my favorite champ or learning good techniques.

Thank you so much for all the responses.

Everyone keeps saying "main role" and I get that, I just don't have one. Is there any one role that you would recommend maining? Does that sound noobish? Idk

I really like jungling, but that requires a completely different mechanical skillset right?

If you want to get better you have to understand that it's best to work on one thing at a time. The first thing I would start with is how often you are dying. Your average death is fairly high, reaching almost 20 sometimes. Dying is fine, but this is assuming there was a benefit to your death, although if you're dying 10+ times while losing frequently it's safe to say your deaths are due to mistakes and not for the benefit of your team. Anytime you die you should ask yourself why you died, and try to understand the mistake(s) you made that led to the death, then see what you could have done to avoid it. A lot of times it is due to bad habits that are done frequently without noticing.

This is a bit more advanced stuff with regard to matchmaking, but here's a copypaste from my going away thread earlier this year: https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/3rdwg6/thank_you_rleagueoflegends/cwn76r9

I echo the advice to practice CSing in bot games, play a lot of ranked focused on improving, not winning, make sure to watch replays of yourself, and watch pros play your favorite role and champion and master that. Watching replays of yourself is painful, but you learn so much. Utilized the replay.gg website for replays and twitch.tv to watch professionals stream their play.

My favorite resource: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWIfnDrWU_Cvc1a8qZribhA

LS is one of pretty few western content creators/coaches I've found who understand the concepts of the game and can articulate them in an understandable and memorable way. He also goes into the nitty gritty micro of the game, as well as macro, so understanding the concepts he brings and learning how to apply them to your game goes a really long way towards improving

Also a helpful resource: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtvPSp4nXGdFCRUR76a2Vwg

I've been enjoying this channel lately; it helps more if you have more background (which LS helps with), where you can start to break down and reverse-engineer what the players do and why. Also generally just looking up replays from top pros.

Bottom line is that a lot of what this game comes to is refining your fundamentals. The game, by nature, is constantly changing, but if you have a solid foundation, you can adapt to anything

LOTS of ways to try to improve. I mean, we all know that MOST of "low elo insults" are pretty much silly jokes anyways.

I'll just give you a few pointers to work on:

  1. Know when is it time to group, split, or take objectives. Who is alive? Who has all their "important spells" (such as ults) up? Simply knowing when to do things would help you get ahead.
  2. Objective > kills. Yes, kills lead to a chance to take down objectives more easily, but there are also games where the team with less kills and shittier KDA wins. If the tower is almost dying and your teammates are busy trying to kill something, go for that tower because once it's down, it's gone forever. Enemy champs are not.
  3. Try to specialize so you can master and play better, but do have a backup plan if shit goes wrong. You don't have to know how to play all roles WELL, but just don't feed. Try to figure out what kind of playstyle is better for you, and practice on that. The game will become more fun, and less chores, if you are playing things you enjoy. Who cares of it's "boring" like Udyr and Singed? Who cares if it's "bad/out of meta" like Lulu botlane or AP Ezreal mid? If you can find fun in those and play well, then go for it.
  4. Learn to build things according to situation, instead of blindly following what others do. Even ADCs have to build according to situation, especially with preseason changes. Rushing things like item 3157 item 3140 item 3102 already counts as "building according to situation", so don't be shy.
  5. If you are ahead, then TRY to stay ahead. If you are behind, then try to look for openings for them to fuck up, and then get ahead from that. Just because you are 10/0 that doesn't mean you should jump into a clusterfuck of enemies and thinking that you can 1v5; no, you can't. This is very important especially if you are the only one ahead, because what will your team do if you are gone? If you are behind, try to look for opportunities to make them fail. Someone out of position or standing a little too front at the frontlines? Catch that idiot! Someone farming ALONE in his jungle while you are with your team? Catch that idiot! Someone on your team deleted an enemy, therefore making a 4v5? Engage on them! Things to consider.
  6. Vision is important!! Self-explanatory. You can not only die less, but also find more opportunities to catch mispositioned idiots.
  7. And lastly, yes we all know this is a goddamn team game, but the only one you should be blaming is you, and focus on YOURSELF when it comes to trying to improve. Yeah yeah, we all know there ARE those days where your team is just helpless and you can't do jack shit because of someone else. Quit bitchin', we all know that you can't win every game. Instead, try to see what YOU did wrong, and improve on that, no matter how big or small. Maybe you should've roamed top instead of bot. Maybe you should've hid more in the backlines as a squishy little shitty mage, or as a jungler you shouldn't be farming ALONE with no wards nearby. Or you realize that maybe trying to steal that drag isn't worth it. Or you could've helped that feeding teammate and bring him back to power, instead of trying to clear a camp or wave. Or you should've aimed that skillshot diagonally, and not directly at them. Many things to look at.

Good luck.

Hey,

This thread is really old. Two years old to be exact. Since threads only need to be a month old for bumping it to be considered a violation of the Universal Rules, I think it's fair to say that this thread falls into that category as well. I'll be applying the padlock. I've also edited out a questionable link.

If we want to talk about being bad at League, let's make a new thread instead of bumping an old one.

If anyone has questions about this lock, please come to the Discord or make a thread about it on Discuss the Boards.

Thanks
