Queued up as Fill for Ranked

This is not a complaint thread. At the start of the season, I decided to play all my ranked games as Fill. I did this because I was interested in seeing how often I would play any given role if left entirely to chance. Please note that out of my 1500 normal games played, roughly 900 were support, so I was well acquainted with the role everyone expects to turn up the most with a Fill Queue.

I've played 103 ranked games thus far (including the placements). Only 77 of those games were Support. I was a little surprised it was not higher. Naturally I played as my most comfortable picks, defaulting to my Leona pick more than I ever would in Normals because I am most comfortable with a two tanky team composition (one initiation, one peel) when it comes to rank. I have a 53% Winrate in the role (60% on Leona and 80% on Braum) finding little success with my mage roster despite my experience on Soraka and Morgana.

I was surprised that Bot Lane/Marksmen was my next highest awarded position. I got 12 games with the role. I do have over 100 normal games with my marksmen but my early CS skills are about the same as one would expect of a potato. I only won 3 of these games and I have chalked that up to playing too passively. I have decent KDA on them and manage about 50% Kill participation, but my damage values are remarkably low. I'm aware this is because I will leave the ARAM mid lane to farm other lanes with minions near tower (fight breaks out and I'm not there, doesn't impact kill participation because team dies). I also notice that I end up doing a lot of CS in base to keep minions off our Nexus turrets while the team is somewhere else. Hard to say if my priorities are in the wrong since my presence very well could be the difference of winning those random fights in our jungle while minions are taking towers. I certainly can't win the follow up fight when their team comes in with the next minion wave and my team is all dead.

I only got 8 games as Jungle (my second most played role in Normals). I played 2 each on my most played Junglers and managed to win a game on each (except Vi because I'm trying too hard to make her tank when I should at least give her Warrior to work with). I don't see me playing Shyvana again, despite my experience. Ranked games really prefer early game presence, which is difficult for Shyvana to do while being a threat (oh, no, the pre 6 Shyvana is running at me). I need to actually practice with my ZAC so I can have the magic damage options of Sejuani/ZAC and the physical damage options of Poppy/Vi. I approach the role as if it was a roaming support, and hope to improve my pathing and usefulness in this position.

I elected to use my Mage Supports Morgana and Annie in the 3 games I got filled to Mid. Won only one of those with Morgana, because she requires zero CS skills and can freely roam to other lanes. Annie annoys me because I barely play Mid in normals and I mess up her Q last hitting too much. Yes, I have over 100 games as Annie but 90% have been as Support and the few Mid games I did use her are so far between that I never bothered to pick that simple skill up.

For the 3 games I got placed top, I decided to stick with my junglers Poppy and Sejuani instead of disgracing the lane with my Irelia (50+ games on this champ in normals and less than a 40% winrate). Picked up my only win in this lane with Poppy. I still don't know how to win this lane. It's my least played role and I don't know the early game matchups. My simple approach has been to focus on not dying, but this has proven to lead to a huge CS deficit and the inability to hold my opponent in lane.

In conclusion, I found the results of Queued up as Fill in Bronze NA to yield:

75% Support 12% Bot/Marksmen 7% Jungle 3% Mid 3% Top

That's because autofill isn't a problem. Trolls are just using it as an excuse to troll. "Oh lulz autofill im not supporting." The reality is that these players were going to troll before autofill.

A lot of people hate the marksmen role. I view it as one of the most demanding roles. Not only in the sense of demanding skill, but it also demands a good internet connection. Seriously, a marksmen with 50 ping will destroy a marksmen with 100 ping. Simply because its that much harder to orb walk and dodge at 100 ping.

There's also so much emphasis on the marksmen dealing a big chunk of the damage late game, and in order to do that, you have to have impeccable micro game, but also a lot of macro game to be where you need to be at the right times. Remember, the marksmen not only deals a bunch of damage in team fights, and quickly pushes waves; the marksmen is also the primary objective taker. Not to mention, with the exception of midlaners, the marksmen is typically one of the squishiest members of a team on a consistent basis.

If people don't play support because they view at as a role they can't carry on, then there's also a fair chunk of people who view the adc role as too hard to carry on.

Personally, my whole experience with League has been primarily in the bot lane as either support or adc. I have probably about half a thousand games on both marksmen champions and support champions. Anyone who says supports can't carry a game is drunk. A support who knows how to play make, win the vision control game, and roam can make or break a team. I view myself as a fairly good adc player, by no means a god, but better than average, and if my support is terrible the lane goes terribly. But, if my support is even half decent (good enough to land some CC here and there), the lane becomes so easy.

How is filling one role 75% of the time "only"? Wouldn't it normally be significantly closer to 20%?

During Feb. break though it doesn't matter what you play because in any div. lower than Gold your team is automatically going to feed all lanes uncontrollably, 4/5 games. At least that's what I've discovered over the years. Props to you for filling so often

Interestingly enough, I've kept track of my 98 Blind Pick games as Fill. For comparison:

  • Top: 10 (10.2%)
  • Jungle: 12 (12.24%)
  • Mid: 16 (16.33%)
  • ADC: 23 (23.47%)
  • Support: 37 (37.76%)

So while you're surprised you didn't have more than 75% as Support, I'm surprised that you're nearly twice as likely to get Support in Draft with Fill than you are in Blind Pick.

I think that when Fill was announced as a role for Draft, a lot of people (myself included) thought it would give a similar role distribution as Blind Pick's distribution. Playing Support about 50% of the time is fine, it's playing it most of the time that was the issue. I believe Riot made a change to Fill in the last few months so it'd be less likely to always slot you into Support, but based on your games it's still no where near Blind Pick's levels.

That's kind of funny cuz I play support secondary and top primary but I almost always get top.

the adc role in a nutshell: your support gets caught and goes 0/3 support:report adc he didnt heal me jungler:report adc mid:report adc adc:feelsbadman

An FYI on your ADC experience - you shouldn't be going for that farm (your top laner should) unless there's either a gigantic wave or you know where the enemy team is (and they can't engage on your team while you clear).

In general, pushing waves is a strategy to get someone to respond to the minions so they can force a 5v4 fight. The ADC responding is the worst option since you're all the damage in the fight. If the top laner responds, you still have a lot of damage threat if they try to tower dive (i.e. your turret replaces your top laner, but your turret can't replace your ADC). The top laner also often has TP (or at least mobility) to get back to the fight and flank if it does break out. Top laners are also better at flanking these fights (if you get 4-1'd but their 4 survivors are all at really low health, a top laner can typically 1v4 clean-up, while an ADC will just get jumped on and 100-0'd with maybe 1 kill in return if you're lucky).

It varies quite a lot by elo bracket. High plat/low diamond where i am currently i almost dont get filled, ever. When i do top is actually the most common fill. Never ever do i get adc (cause adc mains ONLY play adc), mid is very rare, jungle ive never gotten (but im a jungle main, so i only have 10 games ive queued as fill for reference).

I just keep getting autofilled into jungle and having to dodge, because I am garbage can levels when it comes to jungle. If I would get anything but jungle, I would be more than happy to click on that fill more often.
