why am i against low plats and gold 1's while im only in my silver 1 promotion series

can someone explain, because it doesnt make sense to me and its upsetting. im playing against people who are at a way higher tier of play then me when i should be playing against people who are around my level like low gold and high silver right? i wouldnt have a problem with it if i was actually at their level of play but low plat and gold 1 is at a tier of play way better then me but i do fine when i play with low golds
