Help and tips vs Graves

So I've recently been expanding my horizons and moving away from the support role and improve at any role of the game and have been making progress (I'm rarely so outclassed that I'm useless to the team even if i wind up losing lane). But yesterday I played a match as Irelia vs Graves top. So I go into the game thinking: "Oh yeah, melee vs ranged, but it's not the end of the world." I started item 2033 as usual though I considered item 1029 and item 2003s since I knew I would be at a disadvantage, but due to lack of experience, I decided to go with what I knew. Long story short: He was impossible to lane against. I picked up a little farm here and there, but each time I was basically the image of a little kid on the ground getting kicked by a childhood bully. So I IMMEDIATELY started farming under tower, but unlike any other situation I've been in, was unable to even safely do this. I started rushing as much armor and life steal as I could, trying to buy item 3153 and item 3075 (which after researching, I later found out was not a good buy since Graves's damage comes from his abilities and not AAs, which is obvious now that I think about it, but hey, I know now. I gave 2 early kills even after playing safe like I never have before, but got tower dived. Whenever I was too low, I didn't leave it to chance and backed. As I backed, he backed and came back to lane with more item 1036s a item 1037, and item 2003s and basically kept me in the ground. Turret destroyed. Graves starts roaming and I hold my summoner 12 just in case I'm needed and farm so hard while he was gone that a Tryndamere main would do a double-take, JUST to become relevant again. It wasn't the best match. I picked up a few kills, though I went negative, but this presents a good learning opportunity. By the way, my lane was pushed the entire early game, but I never harassed the jungler for ganks so they wouldn't get worked up and play below their own skill level or lower team morale, all in hopes for late game.

So I ask: what Items should I have tried to rush instead of the ones that I did, and any openings I could have exploited between his abilities? (because I didn't see any, and when I tried to play around him, even dodging his Q, I immediately knew I was going to have to wait him out and try to get farm under turret when I could)

Oh, one last thing: I checked the guy on op.gg for the heck of it and found out the guy was Diamond 5. I only just recently started ranked but my mmr is expected to be around Silver 3. I have no Idea how we even MET each other in a match. But yeah, he can taunt a guy so many divisions under his skill level all he wants, I'm just here to take whatever I can learn from the match in order to be able to punish someone else who tries to do the same thing. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY MAKE A MISTAKE.

Thanks for any help!

Try building armor items like item 3742 to miltigate 'most' of Graves' damage

Wait for Irelia power spike before all ins Never let him harass you for free etc

Abuse your sustain when going for heavy trades
