league is turning into a less fun game (hold off the pitchforks)
I'll start by my disclaimers so that no one's triggered too much:
- It's a bit long so please have patience.
- I've been playing since late season 5, started ranked season 6 so my opinion might not have the big vision of someone from vanilla.
- I'm not saying league is dying and that RIOT should care about the opinion of a single player, only trends.
- My champion pool is definitely NOT suited to this meta of dark harvest (praised be his name).
I started out the preseason relatively pleased. I maintained my (more or less) 50% win rate (now down to about 20%), was feeling nice experimenting with the new changes with turret plaitings (getting ridiculously fed from pushing my lane) and overall just enjoying my time playing as is most of my time in this game. Everything started going to shit this week. You all know it: Dark Harvest.
This is not a fun mastery! This might be fun for the 5/0 Shaco 2-shoting me at level 5, but it's not fun to play against. This is a part of the game-fantasy balance difficulty of assassins in general: assassins fantasy is going up to the most fed and influential member of the enemy team and deleting him without him being able to respond (obviously outplays are fun and montage worthy but this is what it boils down to). This game fantasy is hard to balance for other players because no-one like to be deleted and killed in less than a second and loose the game without feeling like you can do anything to stop it. This is why RIOT says they want to add counterplay to assassins' burst: making it reliant on a single skillshot or drag out a bit so that you can use summoners and actives and such. Emphasis on says. The LeBlanc changes were good in that regard, giving you time to react, until her passive kicked in, but then it was reverted in patch 8.8 because "It feels pretty awkward having the right thing to do often be holding off on using your abilities (until your passive has cooked)." Which is another way of saying: "counterplay is not fun for the assassin, screw the ADC"
Now, I'm not here to bitch about LeBlanc being OP or anything like that, if it's one champion I just ban them every ranked game and enjoy myself. It's the trend. In hopes of releasing more fun and cool looking champions and abilities, RIOT inevitably start overloading their kits. From Zoe to Pyke to Akali (what's turrets), champions are getting more and more ridiculous in what they can do that not only do they become impossible to balance (going from OP to trash, never finding that sweet spot), new champion releases aren't exciting to me anymore, they're terrifying. I don't want to see what kind of broken new Frankenstein we'll get now. This is even true to older champions like Nasus: a tank that can 2-shot a carry, a slow that lasts as long as its cooldown leaving you perma-slowed, infinite damage scaling and 20% lifesteal (just 'cause). It's also true about a lot of the tanks: too high base damage just means that 1v1 a tank will 9/10 times kill the ADC. This is all a part of the overloading symptom: it makes a lot of champions aces-of-all-trades having waveclear, relative tankiness, stupid amounts of damage and good pretty much throughout the entire game
I will say that this did make watching LCS and Worlds more fun than it's ever been but playing the game is slowly getting less and less rewarding and fun. It just feels like I can't play to relax, it's always stressing to see who has more dark harvest, who has Mordekaiser and praying to god that your teem doesn't feed. It's not about a single stupid mastery (I don't really think that taking off 20 damage next patch - even all ranks - will do much) or an OP champ in the meta. It's the fact that every champion has turned into pre-nerfs Zoe. While loosing is never fun, it shouldn't be frustrating. You should be able to learn from every loss and even enjoy yourself when loosing. This meta is way past that. It's ran that notion over, set it on fire and peed all over it just for good measures. I've never felt held-back by the meta: during ardent meta I just took Maokai support and engaged on them all game long, after Caitlyn was nerfed I still felt like I can carry with her even though almost nobody played her. In this meta, I feel like non of the champions I like to play are enjoyable or viable because they don't fit the meta.
I want to enjoy the game, I'm really trying to, but you have to help me.
