Balance of CS and Damage

I find that whenever I play adc, it's difficult to determine when to group or when to farm. Either I continue farming bot lane and miss out on the opportunity to provide more damage against the opponents in mid lane, or I ditch farming and lose some farm due to the roam. How can I increase my damage output while at the same time having a good cs?
