Udyr, the Champion in need of an update
Hello there everyone! Today I wanted to play some Team Builder and I was looking through my champions and then I saw
. Now, don't get me wrong, I love
and I think that he has an interesting take on how leveling abilities works, however, I think that because of the way he is right now, he cannot be buffed or have his numbers increased or anything.
Now you may be wondering "Why?". Come on, you all know why. It is for 1 simple reason - he has no ultimate. He has no powerspike and he has only, well, his base stats and values. As cool as it seems, having 4 abilities at level 4 and 3 which can be maxed and having these unique stances, well, it's not enough. I mean, sure, you have all of your abilities at level 4, so what? Any other champion will destroy you/punish you severely if you do this so it doesn't seem that, well, unique. Also, we have Jayce who can have 6 ranks in his 3 abilities, 6!
And what is it with him and his rage being beyond our control? I mean, in his lore it clearly says AND I QUOTE: "Udyr lept at their armies with all the ferocity of a cornered beast". So pressing Bear Stance, running up at someone and slapping them so they get stunned is the "ferocity of a cornered beast"? Come on! Where is his Rage(a.k.a Fury) bar? Where are his animalistic to his abilities? His powerspikes? He needs something more than just hitting people with AAs all day long, spamming either Q/R with E and W. I will suggest only ability updates, not stat updates.
Passive: Primal Rage Udyr's basic attacks grant him rage. Using an ability doubles the rage gain for 3 seconds. Udyr gains 1.5/2.25/3% AS at levels 1/7/13 per 10 rage. When he reaches 100 rage, the AS bonus will double and his Rage will start depleting slowly, increasing over time. During this, the bonus for using an ability will tripple the rage generation of basic attacks. His AS bonus will remain 30/45/60% until he runs out of rage.
At levels 6, 11 and 16, he will receive an Empowered skillpoint. Each Empowered skillpoint can be used on only 1 ability, granting it an additional effect(pretty much what Kha'Zix has and before you start saying how unique that is, Udyr can REALLY use it if he should keep all 4 of his abilities).
Q: Tiger Stance Persistent Effect: Udyr's 3rd basic attack rend's the enemy, applying a bleed effect on the target for 5 seconds. Applying the bleed on the same target adds another stack and refreshes it's duration. Maximum of 3 stacks. Activation: All of Udyr's basic attacks rend their target and increase AS. Gushing Wounds(Empowered): Udyr's basic attacks and abilities deal 10% more damage to bleeding targets per stack.
Bleed Damage: 4 / 8 / 12 / 16 / 20 (+0.1 AD) Bleed Damage: Physical AS increase: 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 / 30% Cooldown: 10 seconds.
W: Turtle Stance Persistent Effect: Udyr gain's lifesteal. This effect is increased by 50% while the shield is active. Activation: Udyr gains a shield for 3 seconds that absorbs damage. Turtle Shell(Empowered): The shield is increased by 7.5% of his maximum health.
Shield: 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 (+0.5 AP) Lifesteal: 8 / 10 / 12 / 14 / 16% (12 / 15 / 18 / 21 / 24% while the shield is active). Cooldown: 10 seconds.
E: Bear Stance Persistent Effect: Udyr's basic attacks Mangle his target, applying a debuff on them. Each stack reduces the MS of the target by 33%. At 3 stacks, the target is stunned. The same target cannot be Mangled again for 6 seconds. Activation: Udyr gains MS for 3 seconds and can walk through units. MS bonus is increased while runnig towards enemies. Bear Roar(Empowered): Upon activation, Udyr let's out a Roar, slowing the MS of all units in a 600 radius by 30% for 3 seconds. He keeps roaring for the duration of the MS bonus.
MS bonus: 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 35% MS bonus running towards enemies: 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45% Cooldown: 10 seconds.
R: Phoenix Stance Persistent Effect: Every third basic attack causes Udyr to send out a cone of flame in front of him, dealing magic damage to all enemies hit. This effect is immediately primed upon activating Phoenix Stance. Activation: Udyr unleashes pulsing waves of fire around himself for 5 seconds, dealing magic damage each second to all nearby enemies for the duration. Phoenix Fire(Empowered): Upon activation, Udyr deals (20+10 per level)(+0.2 AD) damage in a 600 radius around him.
Magic Damage: 20 / 50 / 80 / 110 / 140(+0.5 AD)(+0.35 AP) Magic Damage per Second: 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 / 25(+0.2 / 0.22 / 0.25 / 0.27 / 0.3 AD)(+0.15 AP) Cooldown: 10 seconds.
TO CLARIFY The current damage is 40 / 80 / 120 / 160 / 200(+0.45 AP). To reach that damage, you will need to have 40 AD at rank 1, 60 at rank 2, 80 at rank 3, 100 at rank 4 and 120 at rank 5. If you have more AD, well, the spell will just start getting stronger and stronger.
For the activation damage, it is roughly the same for the early ranks, however, at rank 5 you need only 100 AD to be the same as now and anything beyond that is just making it better.
Now, with these changes Udyr has some clear powerspikes. Reasoning behind most of the changes is simple: adds more to his gameplay. Now, let's be real here, right now ALL you do is spam Q/W/E/R(not exactly in this order) and bitcbearslap and burn and bleed people while also shielding. Due to the extremely low cooldown on the abilities(and the fact that you need 40% CDR on Udyr), this becomes not the best type of gameplay. Oh, wait, in order to actually be successful, you NEED to stay in either Tiger or Phoenix Stance, either your damage plummets. Huh. Also, making Udyr focus on building tank and AD(primarily, there is still AP scaling for y'all AP Udyr's out there), Udyr can, well, build tank and AD and STILL dish out some damage. Making his skills work well with each other(instead of forcing you to stay in 1 stance, like, 70% of the fight) will raise the skillcap of the champion by a LOT. The passive itself will make you want to switch between stances regularly upon reaching 100 rage.
I can go into details on a lot of the changes, however,, I have to clean 2 apartments and a cat to feed. I will check on this later today/tomorrow to see if anyone has shared their opinion. All constructive criticism is welcome and there can be a few changes made. I just wanted to say that increasing the CD of his abilities was necessary if he is to gain a boost to them. Also, it makes sure you cannot just keep the bleed up on a target 100% of the time and will need to refresh it everytime it drops, as well as not doing a 200+ damage nuke every 3.6 seconds by spamming Phoenix Stance... or keeping the enemy team perma-slowed by 30%... or having a permanent shield up.
Anywho, enough rambling for now, I hope this rework is acceptable by Udyr mains and non-mains. Also, it would be cool if the super-mega-awesome looks of Spirit Guard Udyr are applied to the spells you choose to upgrade. This way your opponents know what to watch out for and you can have that super-awesome Phoenix/Tiger/Bear at level 6(Turtle anyone...? No? Okay). Have a nice day! ^.^
