Question on Dark Harvest

So does the thing require me to damage my opponent AFTER they are below 50%? or will it still trigger if my ability is the thing that brought them below 50%? I'm trying to see if i can be a fool and run this on . She is bad at finishing people off but damn if she isn't great at getting an enemy below 50%.
