Roaming was actually pretty common back in Season 1

For a while back in mid Season 1 the 1/1/1/R/J setup was pretty common.

It stuck around until Riot crushed it mercilessly with nerfs to the roamers themselves, the ability to roam effectively, and the ability for a solo laner to come out on top of a 1v2. There were accusations that Riot was trying to enforce the 1/1/2/J lane layout at the time, but eventually the protests fell off and people forgot about it.
