Malzahar AP drastically fallen off

As the title suggests, Malzahar use to be incredibly powerful ap mid laner, but ever since his rework his core spells have drastically fallen off and have been traded off to his minions. Is there not a way where Rito can redirect some of that power back to his core spells (Q, E, R)? I can barely stomach to play him anymore
