I read the Riot pls article and copied the below statement as it appears to attempt to discuss my issue here:
"Here’s the rundown: We know that for some players, dynamic queue undermines individual recognition of skill, and that’s not something we can solve with iterative improvements. It’s a philosophical difference. But, we know a lot of things that can be solved with iterative improvements, and our current top three priorities are improving the solo player experience against premades, lowering queue times, and smoothing out role selection weight. In an ideal (and optimistic) world, getting these numbers right would make a second queue unnecessary, but it’s not something we’re dismissing as of yet. Right now we're prioritizing the stability and health of a single queue - two would split the ranked player base and have a significant impact on wait times - and this is not a decision we’re taking lightly."
Obviously my concern is for them to improve the solo player experience against premades, so I am glad they said it. However, how are they addressing this? It's one thing to state you are making something a priority, but it is another thing altogether to actually solve the problem.
You currently have a system that has too many variables to allow for fair matches to be at reasonable queue times. The initial reaction to this problem was to broaden the criteria to match players, which obviously made things far worse. Yes, games were quicker, but they were far less enjoyable & competitive.
My other issue is that even if games are always matching perfectly, that is, 5 solo players, 4 team 1 solo, 3 team 2 solo etc (you get the idea, there are many combinations) are being matched against equally composed teams, as a solo player it is no enjoyable being the odd man out on a team. If I wanted to play as part of a team, I would hit up the "Team Recruitment" section of the forums and find some players around my skill level to play some ranked 5s. However, that is not what I'm interested in. I enjoy playing solo - that is I enjoyed playing solo - and would like to have that option back.
I honestly don't see a way you can make 1 queue satisfy both player bases (solo players vs team players). I believe Riot is correct when they say it is a philosophical difference, but hearing them say that implies that Riot made a conscious decision this season to try and eliminate solo play as an option to their game, and find that unbelievable because it would no doubt alienate a large portion of the playerbase. If they were to create a solo queue, I believe it would be wildly more successful in terms of queue times & competitive matches. The variables & criteria are so much simpler to workout, that it would be a breeze to create.
The only reason I see them unwilling to do this is not because of "queue times" - queue times would be great - it is because they want to force a different playstyle and eliminate solo players from the game. I think this is a mistake and losing this option has really made league unenjoyable for me personally. It would appear I am not the only one, but I suppose there are also not enough of us for it to matter. It seems Riot has made their decision.
