Riot: # Of Bans - Three or Five?
(DISCLAIMER: This thread is for the purpose of intelligent discussion and/or respectful inquiries into the mindset of Riot Games in regards to this topic. If you post any disrespectful or insulting responses, you will be ignored.)
So, I am sure that plenty of people have already tried to address this topic before (albeit in occasionally accusational/antagonistic ways), but I'm writing this thread in order to get some answers for myself.
Before anyone who reads this misunderstands; this is not a rant. This is not written out of any cry for change, or balance, or anything like that. This thread is purely meant to learn about the reasoning behind Rioters' decisions on the current ban system for draft games. Now that I've made that clear, I'll get into it.
The 3-Ban System
For several years now, we have used this system for our Ranked and Draft mode games. And, as the number of champions available increases, so too do requests made by the community to increase the number of bans for these modes. Stated mostly on a reasoning that three bans are not enough to remove all the "OP" picks at that given time. I am a player as well, and I can understand the frustration of this. Being in Champion Select, it sucks to see when you ban six really strong champions, only to have the enemy team pick two more without any contest.
However, people who make this argument tend to forget what the ban system was originally implemented for; the ban system was never put into play in order to remove "OP" champions from being played, but to provide a strategic outlet for players in the way of banning certain champions for TEAM COMPOSITION purposes. Your team is all about poke and siege, but would suffer from a hard engage? Ban Malphite; not because he is "OP", but because he would ruin your team comp.
That being said, I think we can all agree that this level of thinking has been lost in every outlet of play (especially Solo Queue) with the exception of Professional Play or higher-tier Ranked 5s. So my question to Riot is; has the meaning behind the Ban System evolved, and if so, what does it mean these days?
The 5-Ban System
Quite a few people in the community want to have a greater number of bans in the game, and the number they usually settle at is five for each team, totalling to about ten champions removed from play. Again, this is requested mostly for the reason of removing currently "OP" champions from play. Not exactly the reasoning Riot wanted, but again, it is somewhat understandable.
But in defense of this number of bans, it would also serve to improve the original basis of the ban system; for strategic purposes. With 129 different champions in a game, a team composition can be ruined by more than just three particular champions. It would open up more options in regards to team compositions as well, due to certain popular champions being able to shutdown specific compositions entirely simply by existing. If you want improved diversity, a 5-Ban System would accomplish this in more ways than simply forcing people onto non-"OP" champions.
And on a side-note, my fellow players, take this into consideration; some of you might not remember, but we require at least 16 owned champions in order to play Ranked or Draft modes. So, in the off-chance that 6 of your champions are banned, you still have 10 to choose from. Going off of this, if we were to have a 5-Ban System, this requirement would likely be raised to 20 champions, and thus make it even more difficult for new players to get into the more competitive aspects of the game.
Now that I'm finished, I'll leave these questions for both my fellow community members and for whichever Rioter(s) stumble onto this thread;
- Has the Ban System evolved beyond its original intent? If so, what does it mean to you now, and what would you do to improve it?
- Are you for or against the continuance of the 3-Ban System? Why or why not?
- Are you for or against the implementation of a 5-Ban System? Why or why not?
- (Rioter Specific) Can you give any insight as to what Riot has in store for us given the Ban System? If not, can you at least give an explanation as to why Riot has seemingly decided to keep the 3-Ban System?
