[Opinion] Ability tooltips should show TOTAL damage (1 number) rather than a math equation.

Greetings all,

I have a huge issue with skill ability tooltips in League

Some may read like this: Deal 200(+27) damage and another 150 (+35) damage over 2 seconds

However, I would much rather abilities have the mathematics done for us and we can see the total amount of damage my Q will do, instead of trying to grab my calcluator in the middle of my game.

It should read: Deal 227 damage immedietly and another 185 over 2 seconds.

Can we simplify the clutter which is the skill interface? Lets just have Riot do all the math for us and present the final values of the ability damage on screen, rather than having us calcuate AP ratios, etc.

Do you guys think this is a good QoL change that would be good for the game? Or do you guys prefer for the skill's damage equation to be included in the ability tooltip as something to solve in the middle of the game?

Thanks for reading , and let me know what you guys think

Edit: Found this picture online! This is EXACTLY what I wanna see in League http://i.imgur.com/7mueI2L.png

IMO there should be an in-game option for it.

Like "Simplify Tooltips"

Cause I personally love the non-simplified and it makes it easier for wiki contributors to place values earlier through pbe and buying 100 AD or AP to test scalings. And I personally like seeing base damage separate.

So I don't agree that it should be automatically standard but it should be an option for either or.

This is what I'm talking about! Look at how the interface should look like (bottom image)! http://i.imgur.com/7mueI2L.png

I rather enjoy knowing how my damage is being split up, instead of just being presented with a lump sum.

No thanks, I'd like to see what parts of my Itembuild and Characterstats influence what parts of the Damage calculation.

Removing that would just make the game less clear and less transparent.

So sad how a 24 year old makes a better skill tooltip than a billion dollar company

MunchCrunchLunch10/27/2016, 7:59:00 PM4 votes

i hate to pull out my TI-83 to calculate the damage for some of these abilities.

OP, your tooltip design is awesome. I 100% support them changing it to your design.

If you need a calculator for basic math that a 5th grader knows then i'm sorry but there's something wrong with you

As long as it still shows the scaling like in that picture I approve of this.

If they made it look like that second image I'm cool with it since that offers all the information we currently have with a simplified version as well. In the long run though I don't think it matters in the slightest. Whether your Dark Binding does 50 dmg or 500 you're still going to through it at an enemy that is trying to close the gap and kill you.

this looks actually really good.

but the scalings need to be included just like on that image. i also like the fact that the scaling per rank looks a lot more readable.

its not just the layout of the text, but also the color and font that makes it a lot more readable than the current tooltips.

there could also be an option for expanded tooltips, if theyd get too large. basically the grey text is tuned off and only the yellow text displayed unless you shift + hover with your mouse over the ability button, or you leveled up and try to decide in which ability to put a point.

I mean they could add something that shows the full value, but is it realy that hard to calculate things like 100 + 27...?

Morcyth10/28/2016, 11:34:46 AM1 votes

I like the way the new one looks, but the equation shows the base and the scaling w/o the scaling you would have to do guess work or research to find out a character's scaling w/ items.

DarkHeadgear10/28/2016, 12:59:37 PM1 votes

It must show the scaling of the ability but I do not want to do math to solve for the damage done by an ability. Perhaps 227(200+27) Or something like that

Breaku10/28/2016, 1:02:43 PM1 votes

I just hate when they say things like "for a short time" or "near the center" or "a short distance"

My vote is for an option similar to other games. 'Simple tooltips' could do the math for you and just put a number and color it for the type of damage to shorten it further. White for true, Cyan(or the current magic color) for magic, and the orange color for physical. I like your layout better too though. Tooltips need to be better laid out and I'm not sure why they haven't gone a way similar to yours as well yet.

I would like if it said the total number in big letters, and then said the components somewhere else. doing math is annoying, but I do like to know how much benefit I get from my stats.

Show one number, but also show equation with actual scaling. Basically just like that image.

ChaoticPinecone10/27/2016, 10:25:08 PM1 votes

Even with a straightforward spell like Morgana's Q, the proposal puts a lot of information that needs to be processed. I cant imagine how large the tooltip would be with things like Taliyah's Q, Ryze Q, or Kled's Q.

Sasogwa10/27/2016, 11:00:51 PM1 votes

Well I do the math automatically but to be fair I like to know the scalings of my champions and how much AD/AP/health is actually bringing to the skill. So no, I prefer the current way it is written.

HOWEVER, how about putting an option in the interface to switch it to a display that doesn't show the ratios and show total damage instead. That'd make everyone happy. You'd choose that option and I'd stay with the old one.

FakeGravity10/28/2016, 12:49:01 AM1 votes

ppl want to know how much damage things do but also some of us like to know how much our items are actually contribuying to that even if you know the scaling for an ability and you do the math outside the game when you go in game and you see that number after your build sometimes you change your mind and say "yeah i dont think this is doing enough for me better build something else"

Modl Ryden l10/28/2016, 1:47:28 AM1 votes

I feel that they should show total damage on the bottom right corner of the tool-tip. They do that for champions like Darius Lucian MissFortune on their ultimates.

Keep the tip the way it is, it allows players to see base damages. Which in a lot of cases give people the rational to max it or take it first over other abilities.

Edit: That's a mighty fine mock up you got their sonny. Edit 2: Just looked more into your mock up. I like that way more. That should be a new thing.

DaSarcasticGuy10/28/2016, 2:41:00 AM1 votes

While the second image is very clean and pretty, i don't like the fact that it doesn't have the actual numbers from the scaling. It just tells you the scaling percentage. While it's not a big deal on skills with only one scaling attribute (like the one you displayed) it's much more difficult to see what the actual numbers are if you have multiple scaling attributes.

Xosra10/28/2016, 4:59:20 AM1 votes

no cause then it make it harder to guess a ratio on abilities if you don't feel like looking it up at the time. When i start a game as Morgana i can easily see my W max damage has about a 33% ap ratio and that is good to know.

MrWasjig10/28/2016, 9:01:29 AM1 votes

Look at that gloriously gorgeous tooltip! Rito plz! Can we have? [zombie-nunu-tears]
