Why Do Many Items Have Extra Stats & Effects?

Every item has a general purpose or thematic that it follows, for example Trinity Force || item 3078 ||. Tri Force is mostly designed for low cooldown spell casting champions who utilize Attack Damage. There are quite a few items that do not make sense however and even the ones which do, such as Tri Force, there are extra stats on the item which seem unnecessary.

The Tri Force item has Mana, Attack Damage, Attack Speed, and Cooldown Reduction. These four stats make much sense. You'd need mana to sustain casting on a champion who uses mana. Attack Damage and Attack Speed both relate to the item's passive. Then lastly, the Cooldown Reduction allows the item to be proc'd more often by the champion casting spells. Then we have the last two stats, which make absolutely no sense to exist on this item. Both health and movement speed do nothing in regards to the item and also nothing in regards to how the champion uses the item. They are both stats which should not be on this particular item. It's not the only item with this problem however.

Most of the items in League of Legends have a similar problem, with overloaded stats, all with a root problem coming out of the base items. Here are some base items, with some thoughts related to them.

B.F. Sword || item 1038 ||

This item should be given more damage (50 AD+). Items that build out of this with less damage, such as GA, should be built from Caufield's Warhammer or Pickaxe instead. B.F is an item for champions who want A LOT of AD. That's the concept behind the item, so it doesn't make sense for an item to be built out of it with equal damage to the base item. Many items such as Death's Dance and Maw of Malmortius should be built out of a B.F. Sword instead of Caufield's Warhammer, and the CDR on those items should be removed.

Caufield's Warhammer || item 3133 ||

Caufield's is fine for the most part, however less items should be built from it. Items such as Death's Dance and Maw of Malmortius have no thematic or use related to spell casting and make no sense to build from Caulfield's.

Phage || item 3044 ||

Phage and Jaurim's Fist have a matching thematic, both are designed for AD bruisers who need Attack Damage and Health. The movement speed on Phage builds into two items which both do not have a thematic tied to movement speed, meaning that Phage is really an item that doesn't have a reason to exist anymore.

Last Whisper || item 3035 ||

The Black Cleaver should be building out of Last Whisper instead of Phage.

Pickaxe || item 1037 ||

This item really should be able to build from a Longsword.

Blasting Wand || item 1026 ||

This item really should be able to build from an Amplifying Tomb.

Getting tired so just going to write this out.

  • Spirit Visage: Also should not have CDR. Should build from a Crystalline Bracer instead of a Kindlegem.
  • Warmog's Armor: Shouldn't have CDR, Kindlegem in the build is unnecessary.
  • The Black Cleaver: Why does this item have movement speed? Also it's an armor shred item, which should be building from an armor shred base item. Building it from Phage makes no sense.

Tank item and survival items should never have CDR, since spells in League of Legends are almost always utility or offensively oriented. There is rarely any spell which is purely defensively oriented and when they are it's usually in a champion's kit which is designed to deal damage.

Items that are offensively oriented should have a clear purpose. Designing items for spell casters with movement speed on them is clutter that makes champions stronger with the item than they need to be. Items also shouldn't randomly gain passives when they didn't build out of anything related to that passive (Black Cleaver).

Alright, end of rant.
