Wukong is being left behind, needs an update
The other day I realized just how much top lane has changed in the past couple of years. Before, top lane was the land of tanks and fighters where success depended on outplays. Nowadays outplays are still a thing but I feel like every "standard" top lane champion has been given some form of sustain. This sustain can come in the form of a life gaining ability or passive or an ability or passive that grants tank stats or a general shield. Here is some specific information:
Lifesteal/Health regen champions: Fiora, Nasus, Olaf, Trundle, Cho gath, Darius, Renekton, Garen, Vladmir, Maokai, Irelia, Aatrox, Trynd, Mundo, Rengar, Tahm, Zac, Volibear, Kayle, Kindred
Shields/Tank gaining abilities champions: Riven, Naut, Tahm, Gnar, Shen, J4, Garen, Graves, Maokai, Jax, Ryze
Passives/Abilities that block attacks: Pantheon, Yasuo, Shen, Jax, Taric
Invulnerability: Fizz, Kayle, Trynd
Now, if you see that list above, I guess you could add Wukong to the Shields/Tank group because his passive grants him armor and MR for each nearby enemy champion, however this stat "buff" is MINIMAL when considering if top lane you will only have one lane opponent. Now you can argue that Wukong has a W disengage, but this does not really add to his ability to sustain in lane since W costs quite a bit of mana early game and people can straight up pink ward you to negate it not to mention many champions nowadays have abilities that grant vision. Also, the clone can absorb individual dmg abilities but most abilities nowadays are aeo abilities. So, overall, Wu has a huge disadvantage with pretty much any lane matchup. Sure Wu could run the Grasp of the Undying mastery but if that's what it takes for Wu to gain some sort of sustain then what's the point of saying that masteries can be adaptable to player's playstyle? Thunderlord's is clearly Wukong's best mastery as he is a burst champion and the dmg he does with an e auto q combo is amazing. But, my point is, seeing that 90% of top laners nowadays have something in their kit to keep them in lane longer or allowing them to skirmish better, shouldn't Wukong have that too? Or is the game trying to move Wukong to the jungle where the clone is most optimal?
Perhaps if his W not only blocked and did minimal magic damage but also gave Wukong health back based on a percentage of damage it absorbed+ dealt from minions and to champions? This would certainly make Wukong more interesting of a champion, provide more outplay, and give him the sustain and security he needs in lane and jg in order to farm well! Or, perhaps the life gain comes from how much life the Wu clone has at the end of its use? This way people will have incentive to focus on attacking the clone and it makes the life gain not OP and provides the real Wu with more chance to escape/play safer.
