Should you be rewarded for not using stopwatch?

As it stands taking stopwatch reduces the cost of zhonyas with stopwatch is 2600 (rune) and 2300 (bought). So if you take the rune then using stopwatch has no downside as far as upgrading to an item. Quite a few champions benifit from stopwatch and it is only slightly contested by magical footwear. Making it the rune you usually take in that tree.

While I'm not implying stopwatch needs a nerf I think using stopwatch should reduce the amount of gold you get off of your item, Or increase the amount of gold it cost to upgrade you could say. It just makes more sense to work that way no? It is a broken stopwatch after all. That way playing to conserve stop watch would have a upside and players would be rewarded for playing safely; Rather than rewarded for taking risks because of the free invulnerability.

I don't know how you would go about balancing it as far as the entire tree goes but I think it would make a lot more sense as a mechanic. Thoughts?

Imo that item is still a failed experiment and should finally be removed again. Especially when champions who don't even build Zhonyas have it you just feel bullshitted.

Stopwatch is a skilled item that requires game knowledge, teamwork and map awareness to fully maximize it otherwise it is kind of useless unless your enemy refuses to acknowledge it and turret dives you while you have it and that is their fault for being bad. Which is part of why it is hated so much. Considering the amount of nonsense burst in the game, penalizing one of the few ways of surviving that for a couple of seconds seems like a horrible idea.

I disagree.

In the world you describe, the optimal play is just to stay safe until you can buy your Zhonya early. And in that world, if you do that, the Rune reads just as "Get 300 gold at 15 minutes" or something like that. Doesn't that sound like a boring Rune to you?

I much prefer a Rune that encourages you to make moves knowing you have a safety net, but a safety net that requires skills and good timing to use efficiently. Just getting free 300g in the shop isn't fun.
