Emotes; A retrospective! or I used Emotes for one game, AMA
I bought the starter pack so I could take them for a spin. Here are some initial thoughts:
**1. I don't think this is going to save lives. **
It's supposedly to prevent typing - I'm all for that, but it strikes me as clunky. What I'd really love, if they're going going to appear above my head, is to have a sidebar I can click. I'm willing to concede it's a learning curve issue. I know when to type, and how to quickly punch up a repsonse. I know what resources typing takes from me and what it doesn't.
Emotes on the other hand are as weird as Taliyah abilities. Like a man trying to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete when he's used a Mac for 10 years, I can do it, it's just a little like "Wait, where is the T key again?"
2. Needs more uptime
If I'm going to send a signal to people, I need it to be longer that.
- Needs more animation
The surrender flag can't wave? The "OK" symbol can't gesture? (Also why is the OK symbol not Rammus? wtf?) Can't amumu actively cry?
- The price is kinda stupid
450 is the price of some skins. There's never going to be a time where a skin is less cool than an emote. As it currently is, I anticipate this being the Facebook Poke of LoL. It will be weird when someone uses it a year from now, and you'll go "Oh yeah...emotes...cool"
- Why can't I locate them somewhere?
If you want confused blitzcrank to replace the harassment of the MIA ping, I kinda need to ask "Wtf was that" on the person doing the thing. These people aren't exactly on their A game. They aren't going to look at me to realize they're screwing up.
