Cunning can Have Hybrid Resistances, Ferocity can't? - Discussion
When investing in Ferocity, you have the choice to pick either Battering Blows or Piercing Thoughts which give you either 7% armor or magic pen. The Cunning tree on the other hand has Precision which grants both armor and magic pen as a flat instead of a % amount. You can also choose Intelligence instead which gives 5% extra CDR that goes over the cap.
I see two problems with this. The first one is the tactical aspect. When introducing the new mastery system, the goal was to let the player make choices that will be meaningful - yet the choice between armor pen and magic pen is pretty much a nobrainer, you literally just have to look at your damage graph to determine which one is better. The choice between Intelligence and Precision on the other hand is much more meaningful. Most CDR-capping mages for example have to make choices depending on preference. Another Example is Urgot, who also makes great use of both masteries. With pretty much every champion in the game you actually have to first think about which one you will choose instead of just picking the obviously better one.
The second problem is balance. The reason Thunderlord's was picked over the Ferocity masteries was not only because of Thunderlord's itself but also because of Precision just being flat out better than Battering Blows or Piercing Thoughts, as Meteos has pointed out in the 6.1 patch rundown and some other players have mentioned aswell. As a mage for example you will always autohit minions or use them in trades for some extra damage while some AD champions on the other hand have a lot of magic damage in their kit like Ezreal's W, E and Ult or MF's E. This is especially appearant in kits which deal an even greater mix of physical and magic damage, like Corki, Jax etc, who lose 1/3 of the pen they could have used if it gave hybrid pen like Precision.
My proposal is to combine Battering Blows and Piercing Thoughts into one mastery which will give both magic and armor penetration. This frees up a slot for another mastery that could be chosen instead. This could be anything but I had the idea of making a mastery that gives 0.3 attackspeed overcap, simular to Intelligence in the Cunning tree. But there is room for pretty much everything so I'd like to see some other ideas too.
