Something that bothers me about Alpha Strike

So, as the title might imply I have questions about Master Yi's Q ability:

1) Why is Alpha (or Beta as of recently) Strikes' damage delayed until after the animation has finished instead of applied at the same time he actually strikes his opponent?

Well, one could answer: Because if the opponent dies while you're in Alpha Strike, you'll get teleported back to the position where you casted the ability.

But 2) How does that make sense?

My 2 cents are:

  • From a pure logical aspect: An opponent should recieve the damage when he gets striked. I doubt Master Yi is so fast during this ability that his opponents realize half a second later they got damaged/are dead. (Pardon me for this one.) Also Yi should always end up at the location his first target is/was (even if he's dead). Although this isn't completely logical either since he actually dashes to further opponents, it still makes more sense than teleporting back to the origin in my opinion.

  • From a mechanical/gameplay aspect: The dash-reset where you Q a dying minion on purpose to end up at the location you started at isn't really widely used. While it's admittedly funny, it doesn't really have many use-cases. It's also no mechanic most opponents would use on purpose to deny Yi the gapcloser. (Deny Yi by suiciding = worth?) Most of the time it's just a "What?" moment for both sides.

  • From a balance aspect: Looking at Yi's current winrate (~47% according to op.gg) he might need some small buffs. I do agree that his damage output is more than high enough already so I wouldn't modify this part either. I think the change of making his dash reliable would boost his performance slightly without making him feel more oppressive in any way. Applying the Q damage instantly should also work in Master Yi's favor since his opponents will have less time to drop their delayed AoE abilities which will hurt Yi afterwards. (E.g. Veigar box or Dark Matter, Tibbers). Also I don't think Master Yi suffers from dealing too much in too less time. An ult-Q-AA will never one-shot someone like Rengar does. So I think it's ok to remove this (unlogical) counterplay which also happens in the edge case where he kills his opponent only.

Conclusion: Changing Alpha Strike to be more reliable and logical would make Master Yi feel smoother. The pro arguments also outweight the mechanic it removes. I think a Gamma Strike would be appropriate.

I'd be glad to listen to others opinions and be even more glad if someone could add some context on why Alpha Strike was implemented the way it is currently!

Sincerely, Watson

Tl;dr: Alpha Strike being weird at the moment. Should deal damage as soon as he jumps to enemy and always end up at first target's location, no matter if enemy dead or no.
