What is the point of "compensation"?

So can anyone tell me why Riot feels the need to "compensate" certain champions when they get nerfs for being too powerful. That defeats the purpose of a nerf right? That champion is nerfed because its deemed to be a problem so why would Riot buff it in other areas since that is not really nerfing anything, just power shifting to other areas.

Riot essentially do this because they are lying to their fanbase. They want to keep certain champions powerful (because of popularity and skin sales) and give people the illusion that they are actually doing something about them.

This is such an obvious lie, I do not understand how some people are not capable of seeing it. Riot lie to their customer base pretty much all the time and are just another example of a gaming company that falls due to its own arrogance, contempt for players or mismanagement from another body (Tencent Games).

  • Ion Storm
  • Bioware
  • Visceral
  • Atari
  • THQ
  • Westwood

The list goes on. I can only hope that Riot and Blizzard are not soon to be added to the list because both companies are going the same way and not listening to player concerns or giving their players what they actually want. Instead choosing to milk "chromas" (which I will never buy) and skins that are getting lazier with each one that comes out.

I also find it very sad that we are living in an age where Fornite, an unexceptional, repetitive shooter that completely lacks depth is the number one most played game in the world. Really makes me despair for these new younger types of gamers.

Compensation buffs don't really remove the point of a nerf. There are certain cases where compensation nerfs are unnecessary like in the case of the riven e cd nerf accompanied by a buff to her q cd. The main reason compensation buffs happen is usually because A)the champion works in multiple lanes, but in only a problem in one and B)they are trying to curb a mechanic that makes a champion overpowered without gutting them.

Let's say a champion has an ability that deals 1 damage on a 10 second cooldown and an ability that deals 100000000 on a 10 second cooldown. Assuming the second ability doesn't have a reason to be doing abnormally high damage, it gets reigned in to a typical value. That leaves the champion very weak, so the first ability gets buffed to a typical value (again, assuming there isn't a reason for it to do abnormally low damage). Despite receiving both a buff and a nerf, the champion is made weaker as a result of both changes.
