Why specifically fewer base offensive stats on marksmen would help balance the game and the class
Ever considered how OP crit items are on marksmen but how only a handful of melee champions can even consider building crit? (Ex: Tryn, Yasuo...Yi?) That's because melees aren't expected to live through less than one rotation from the enemy team alongside their marksman without defense items which takes the option of fitting any crit in their build off the table. If marksmen had fewer free offensive stats per level, they'd be less of a daunting threat with their crit builds mid-lategame when fed and botlane would snowball less often in general. Then people would generally consider crit on non-marksmen again and consider non-crit builds on marksmen more often because their damage from abilities and bonus AD/AP/AS scaling would still be the same.
Melees no longer building crit symbolizes that marksman DPS is excessive. If they do build it now, unless they have an ability like Undying Rage or Windwall they will die in less than a full rotation of the enemy team alongside their marksman which would cost them collectively next to nothing for the kill. This means that the only effective way to build crit now is to abuse evasion, either in the form of abilities or AA range. Crit builds are not OP; marksmen are.
When a botlane gets ahead or even moderately farmed, their marksman's items push their damage over the top to the point where it largely invalidates the enemy team in fights unless the other botlane is equally fed or farmed or the enemy team manages to nuke them at the start of the fight. This especially counts towards crit builds right now as not only their AA range - their trademark stat - amplifies the build's effectiveness, but their raw AD/AS multiplies its effectiveness yet again. They have an egregious amount of free stats later on in the game for what their AA ranges are which is exactly why Vayne was nerfed and why the nerf was her base AS and her bonus AD from her ult. Marksmen simply gaining levels earns them dps which hasn't been a problem in LoL's history until now since runes give more additional % damage than they ever have; armor items seeing nerfs over the years exacerbates this problem as well.
Marksmen might not gain much base AD per level but most start the game with an already very high amount of base AD (64~65) and their AS is of a similar fashion. Less AD/AS per level would make crits significantly less effective, which would make other build options like Lethality more attractive as their ability damage and scaling would stay the same. This wouldn't break builds like on-hit or Lethality (obviously, since it's a lesser nerf for them as well) but would bring those builds in line with crit builds and make them equally as attractive as the damage lost in those builds would be minimal in comparison.
In conclusion, marksmen break the game right now because their base offensive stats are abused by crits, and lowering those stats would help bring the game much closer to balance. Even 1 less AD per level for each marksman would greatly help alleviate this problem, or a similar combination of less AS and AD per level. We'll also see crit being itemized for more than just marksmen as other classes won't die to them quite as quickly. Thank you for reading.
