Why do people que as fill/support second choice?

If they aren't a support main?

I'm not being sarcastic and complaining about how lopsided the matching is here, I'm just legitimately curious. You know that support is in higher demand than other roles, and there is no incentive to play it other than shorter que time, so if you don't want to primarily play support (ie more than 50% of your games) why would you put support or fill in as one of the choices you make for what role to que for? Why keep doing it if you aren't committing to being a support main (but you know you will get it more than your "main" role), and why list it second if you're a support main and not playing it as an off role?

You list it second if you are a support main but you do not want to do it 100% of the time. This keeps you from burning out and makes sure that you do not become a One Trick Pony. You'll still get it about 95% of the time, but there will, rarely, be some variety.

A lot of support mains are also really good at other roles because being good at support requires a bit of something from all of the other roles. Some people are just bot lane mains where either ADC or support does not matter, since they focus on learning bot lane matchups and how to win them. Other supports are really good at initiation/teamfighting so they go to other lanes and do that. Some are really good at roams/ganks so they go to other roles to do that.

Two reasons:

  1. Some people still don't understand that "primary" and "secondary" are misnomers. It functions more like "Role 1" and "Role 2". People expect that matchmaking will favor the primary role over the secondary; but in reality it just looks at a team comp, finds a role missing that you put down in either space, and plops you down into it. The system doesn't care if you get 1 or 2, it just cares if you get either one. So if you're expecting to get your primary role more often than your secondary because you think matchmaking favors it more, then you are in for a bad time. Riot should either label them better, or actually make matchmaking favor one over the other.

  2. Some people are optimists. Everyone knows supports are in short supply, but for some reason they hope against hope that if they fill they'll get another role that's not in demand. And that's sort of like dropping a rock off a cliff and then betting that the rock won't fall downwards. The odds are not in your favor here. If you are tired of filing and getting stuck with support, then do not fill. It's that simple. In a perfect game, fill would mean you have a 20% chance of getting any role. As we all know, League is far from a perfect game.

Because they don't want support 95% of the time, and would prefer getting it 85% of the time.

I don't like 20 minute Queue times and I know how to Support, might as well. Doesn't mean I don't want to get my Primary though, it would be nice if i got it like at least 30% of the time instead of 1% of the time.

You can pick fill as primary now and not have to pick a secondary.
