Question about where to play Yi and about silences?

Hey there! First things first, about Yi.

I've had Yi for a while, but never really played him much against other players in the Rift (have a lot in ARAM) and the main reason is because I hear he's mainly used as a Jungler. A role that I have NO idea how to play properly. I know that you need to kill jungle monsters, but the question is "When to kill what and when to help your lanes?" kinda thing. I don't know that kinda stuff.

So the question is, where should I play Yi if not as a Jungler? Should it be top or mid or? I want to gain mastery ranks in him. Thanks in advance!

The second part, about Jungling.

I do not know a single thing about Jungling. Tried jungle in a bots match and seemed fairly straight forward, but knowing that bots and real people are entirely different...I'm not sure how I would jungle against actual people. You have the enemy Jungler to deal with, the enemy team invading to help the jungler, helping your own lanes, and getting the kills you need.

I ask about Jungling because sometimes I'm asked to jungle, but I really don't know how. My jungle champs (that I know and am pretty decent in playing) include Diana and Yi. Diana I play Mid a lot, but know she is pretty decent jungling, but I have no idea how to Jungle.

So my questions about jungling are thus.

  1. What do I go for first in timers of monsters?
  2. What's after that?
  3. When do I know when to help gank and or help my team?
  4. When should I push objectives?
  5. Should I invade the enemy jungle and if so, when?
  6. Should I, the jungler, focus on putting up vision for the team (not just for myself) or should I rely on/ask my team for that?

And any other tips you'd think would help would be appreciated, thanks!

Now, the final part of my questions thread has to do with silences.

For toggle abilities, such as Karthus's Defile does Silence stop those? For example, if it's toggled on and he gets silenced does it stop working/dealing damage or does it just get stuck toggled on with all its benefits? Same for any other toggled abilities. Wondering for a concept I'm creating as well as just general info since it doesn't list anywhere what it affects (least not that I've found for recent versions of the game).

Another thing is, when someone gets silenced and they're in the middle of an ability cast animation or something, does it not stop the cast or does it release the cast?

I ask because I've silenced people like Jarvan when playing as Fiddle and he still gets off his spear knock up combo even though I hit him with the silence, and when I silence Ashe she still gets off her Arrow Volley ability as well as her multiple hits. So I'm just curious about this. Maybe it's a weird bug where they get silenced, but because they pressed the ability it still goes off? Idk, but just info on silences would be appreciated! Thank you!

P.s. I know that Silences stop channeled abilities like Nunu's ultimate and Karthus's ultimate, but I'm talking about toggled constant abilities that drain mana/health like the ability Mundo has with those fire orbs around him (forget the name). So I know some of what silences stops while it's going, and what it stops if you're silenced, but not the specifics. Thanks.

P.s.s. Another question unrelated, but just wondering. Does Yoricks wall of corpses that surrounds you stop you from flashing out of it? I ask because I was caught in it, but couldn't flash out. And before someone asks if I was snared or stunned, I could still use my abilities and the heal spell, as well as move around inside of it. So I don't think I was snared or stunned, but maybe I was snared for a brief moment? But I couldn't flash until after the wall went down...so idk. Thought I'd ask. Thanks!

A role that I have NO idea how to play properly.

Funny enough, I'd say Yi is one of the better champions for teaching players how to Jungle, at least with the farming play style.

I'm going to be frank here, you need to spend time and build the experience for yourself. If you just want to try out Yi now without having to learn Jungle at the exact same time, I understand that much, but really, the Jungle is not that hard if you just get used to it with a safe Jungler.

"When to kill what and when to help your lanes?"

"Oh hey an easy kill"

If you're playing Yi in particular, this should be your thought process.

Most Junglers, while sharing similar patterns, all have their unique answers to situations such as ganking. Yi's answer is to mostly ignore them unless it's an easy sweep for himself. See, Yi's power scales really hard on gold. Like, fails if he doesn't have it but becomes a monster if he does have it scales hard. Your main priority on Yi is to get yourself fed as fast as possible. This does not mean to force ganks which can easily fail and waste the hell out of Yi's time and gold potential. It means get easy money by constantly farming and only leaving the Jungle to swipe the easiest of ganks. Get it?

So the question is, where should I play Yi if not as a Jungler?

I vote mid. If you learn how to Alpha dodge or Meditate block, you become increeeeeeeeeedibly overwhelming against most other Mid Laners.

Top laners on the other hand tend to power spike specifically where Yi is weak, so even if you Alpha Dodge or Meditate perfectly, they may just stat check you anyway and generally steamroll the fight over you.

I don't really like Yi since they removed devourer, but I still have mastery 6 and 100+ thousand points. Hes not very good in lane and I would stick to only jungle with him. The thing with jungling is that it's all situational. There's not a certain time to gank lanes or to farm, it depends on game. When they're pushed up to your tower, that's the best time to gank. But don't do it if you think you can't get them, because then it wastes time and is risky. For Yi I start krugs (I ask for no leash), red buff, raptors, recall, then go blue, gromp, river skuttle, wolves. At your level, don't worry about invading. At least at the start. If you see their jungler on top and you're bot, then you could invade if you can take camps solo. Vision is a team job. Use your wards but don't buy the warding jungle item on Yi. He needs the blue or red (I prefer blue) item.

I'd say practice your clearing in a custom game and try to take a 10 minute dragon.

Ok so for yi, if you must play him outside of jungle, your best bet top (rarely would it work mid). I really wouldn't suggest yi top for what it's worth. The pros to it are that True damage is a bitch for top laners (who tend to be on the tackier side). The cons to it are that those tanker people also tend to have hard CC, which is the number one way to counter (hard cc=can't auto attack). Sure top Yi can work in the right scenario but it takes the right matchup. Yi needs farm so if you go for a solo lane, you really shouldn't fight unless it's a sure thing until you have a few items under your belt. Yi just needs too much farm to be useful and most teams will have the sense to not allow an under-fed Yi to wreck their back line.

As for your jungle questions, the best way to improve is to just get out there and do it (in norms of course). I can offer some advice but the best way to learn is practice.

  1. First clears can really set the tone for games. I know a buddy I duo with will do group that go invade their red and go for first blood. Typically I like to go with a small camp, then do my buffs then gank at level (as I usually play champs who can level 3 like Gragas, Nidalee or Rek'sai). This is one option. However, on a champ like Yi, you are probably best suited with just doing your first clear as a full clear then buying. As I said above, Yi needs gold and Yi has no Cc do doing a level 3 gank on Yi without damage is risky. Outside of making sure you get your buffs when they're up tho, there really doesn't need to be any crazy priority on certain camps so long as you're farming. The only exception to this is that towards the mid/late game you'll want to start snoring wolves and raptors more for the vision assistance they give you.

  2. After your first clear, you have a couple options. If on your first clear you just hard farmed and took the buffs early. The best bet would probably be to wait until level 6 (that's about when your second red buff would be up) and gank level 6. Some champs (like Yi) are much more effective at level 6 and can really just benefit by getting there as fast you can. If you decided to do a jungle path where you clear the four small camps, then buy then go back and take your buffs this becomes a level 4 gank. Most champs that can gank level 3 can gank just as effectively level 4 so the only real bonus here is either getting that second level in an ability or just being a little unpredictable.

  3. Ganking is probably the toughest part of jungling. Here are some general rules that I try to follow. Keep in mind that these aren't perfect, just general ideas if you are about to gank but your red buff has respawned, wait and take red buff first. The burn damage and slow makes ganks much more effective. if you are about to hit level 6 (on most champs, Nidalee and Elise don't need level 6 as bad since their ults are available at level 1) finish that level and then gank if all of your lanes are pushed to the enemies tower, don't force anything. Tower dives are difficult to pull out, especially early. It's better for you at that point to just keep farming or just sit in a bush in one of those lanes for a little while waiting to counter gank. don't gank a losing lane. If someone has already fed a couple kills to their lane opponent, don't try and help them. Go snowball another lane and then take your fed laner and go duo gank that lane.

  4. Objectives will differ based on your team comp. Some comps are built to fight around objectives and win those team fights. While some are best set to siege towers and some are best to split push. As such, it's hard to give a great response to this question. What I will say is that if their jungles is dead and you have priority bot side, take dragon. If you are bot side and top gets ganked, take dragon. Basically anytime you know the jungler isn't bot side, you can pressure dragon

  5. Similar to the answer about objectives, if the jungler is dead or shows on one side of the map, odds are you are clear to invade the opposite side (or wherever if he's dead). The only thing to be weary about is where the minion waves are at in the lanes near you. Say you invade top side because you see their jungler bot. If both mid and top waves are pushed into your towers, your laners can't provide you any safety if you get pressured by their laners. If the waves are pushed into their towers, then their lanes have to give up a decent amount of farm to answer any invades you make.

  6. Vision is great. Every position should work towards vision for the team. Some specific things though... Smiting Wolves is good is their jungler has been getting really aggressive in your jungle. Smiling raptor (especially early) is really powerful as you can clear vision before they even have a chance to get a sight stone or any links when wards are at their lowest. If one of your laners is playing very pushed, you get some deep vision or river vision to help them see any coming ganks. While you should do more than just vision, junglers in the early have the easiest way to provide vision everywhere (as the support isn't to a point where they can roam yet).

Like I said, I'm not the best jungler but that's what I can offer. Go into normals and just play jungle. That's the best way to get better. You can also watch pro streamer who jungle (Meteos, I Will Dominate, Nightblue) who can help show some good jungle paths and ward locations and what not.

Watch this guy stream. He plays a lot of master yi. Then go watch his youtube videos and see if he has any guides.

Youtube has tons of guides on jungling. I know watching a bunch of videos can seem tedious, but if you put the time in and listen its one of the best ways to learn :)
