@RIOT why solo/duo in the same queue?
If you're going to split the queue into two separate queues, why not have one be strictly solo and the other be however many you want?
What is gained by allowing duo queuing on the solo ladder?

I agree with you, we should have a strictly solo and another be however many players you want.
In fact I just made a post about why many (not all, but many duos are guilty of this) duos (and other premades) are annoying to soloQ players.
People complained about duos in SoloQ all the time before. "Duo bot" was pretty much a meme.
It was Solo/Duo before and no one had an issue with it.
Besides the fact solo queue has always been really solo/duo, since the dynamic flex queue is going to have its own rewards next season, they want to make sure the team play really is team play.
It's relatively easy to get a random person to queue with you and for all practical purposes play identical to solo and you'd probably get nearly as far, but with 3+ people you actually need to coordinate to do well (since the opposing 3+ will theoretically be coordinating themselves). If they want to use the flex queue as a measure of ones ability to coordinate on a team level, allowing duos into that ladder might miss the mark.
edit: I will say, as a always solo player, I would prefer if solo queue was truely solo and I could potentially get in on the team rewards without needing to actually coordinate 2+ others, but I can see where they're coming from around this.
