The Tragedy of Riot's Classing System: Mages

The tragedy of Battle Mages

If I could use one phrase to explain what a battle mage is, I’d say that they’re magic juggernauts. That’s mostly because that is exactly what they are and I’m not in the mood to explain anything more nuanced than that.

Now, as the kind of crazy person who likes playing Juggernauts and Vanguards, (seriously, I’m not explain this, [click here](http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/gameplay/dev-blog-classes-subclasses)) Immobile tanky-ish mages would be right up my alley, and they are because Aurelion Sol is the best, but my problem and my entire reason to write this is that this whole classing system for mages seems irrelevant. Riot has split mages into three groups: Battle, Burst, and Artillery Mages. These are pretty self explanatory, and I’d love to say that these are clear divisions that I see in game, but they aren’t. I frankly feel as though this is because of Rylai’s Crystal Scepter. I’ll be frank, I don’t have solutions that aren’t meant to be funny, so strap in for venting or jump off now.

My biggest problem With Rylai’s is the Got-Damn stats. Someone tell me why this thing gives some much shit? You get 400 health, 100 AP, and a free slow. Frankly, I think this gives too much AP because why the hell do you need 100 AP if you’re dealing sustain damage? Shouldn’t these %%%%%s just scale well but not need the NB3 1000 AP goal? Why not lower it to like 70~? And why is the slow on it so big? Shouldn’t Itemized cc be significantly less than character cc? I love Rylai’s on pretty much all the Battle Mages I play, but I get a 40% slow for hitting someone with a spell, And 20% for DOT damage, so I ask; why? I’m pretty ok with a 10-20% slow on DOT, but why a 40% slow on aoe and single target? I think 30% is much more reasonable and could encourage the use of, oh, I dunno, STORMRAIDERS SURGE ON BATTLE MAGES. Nothing feels worse than dying, not to stuns, but to being stuck in a 9 billion% slow from god knows where.

So instead, why can’t we just tone down the damage and slow on Rylai’s, therefore better defining the kinds of mages there are since literally every mage buys Rylai’s, while also making stormraiders more useful and making adc’s cry less.

Ok I’m done.

Feels good to make things again. AurelionSol

The tragedy of the class system is that idiots will forever assume it means that any one character under the umbrella of a class will abide by a single set of standards, where it's rather a system to avoid each champion being classed their own way as they probably ought at this point, being that bruisers are about the only consistent demographic.

AP is not the same as AD, outside of a few specific champs you can't just constantly apply 100% of it on every auto attack. Most mages don't even get 100% on every spell.
