Renekton Feedback Please
Hey, I am gold 5 and main toplane. I have played this game for several years now and understand macro post-laning phase better than most people at my elo; however my laning macro and mechanics are mediocre - hence my g5 rank. I would like to propose some modest changes for renekton based on where he is right now and where other champs are at. Some of you are very new and or have never learned how to play renekton or play against him at even the most basic level. Others have far more experience and knowledge than me. The observations and claims I make are based on my experience playing mostly AS and sometimes against renekton in ranked play. Due to my understanding of the game (at least for bronze-low gold elo) in both micro and macro and my long history of playing ranked, I believe any honest person ranked higher than me ought to spend more time actually considering what I say whether they agree or disagree than they would with the average person of my rank. I know more of what I am talking about than anyone in their right mind would believe - having theorycrafted multiple meta builds/roles/champs before they were meta. Morg support, naut sup, naut top, on-hit frozen mallet jungle builds to name a few. With some of my qualifications discussed, let's move onto the proposal followed with a discussion of why.
Proposal: Option 1 - buff renekton's early game so that other duelists and lane bullies don't get a free pass to go even in laning phase and simply outscale; currently without jungle intervention by either side, it feels too easy for an equally or higher skilled opponent to do this. Personally, I don't like this option and I don't think most of the community would either since a renekton who gets a minor lead can punish severely. Option 2 - buff renekton's scaling - looking more towards teamfighting and survivability/tankiness. I think adding some minor resistance stats to go with the hp from his ult would be reasonable. Either something like 20/40/60 armor and mr (while in dominus form) or some kind of minor % resistances buff while in dominus form (ex: +5/10/15% bonus armor&mr) would be reasonable.
Why?: Currently, renekton is in a state where he CAN bully the lane; however many enemy duelists can also go even with him enough so that his minor cs advantage cannot be snowballed to the point renekton needs it to be for how hard he falls off late game. The only way renekton gets a big enough advantage to punish the enemy duelist is via early jungle pressure - something that should not be a necessary win condition in solo queue or pro play. Yes renekton can win without jungle help; however, this requires the opponent to make mistakes they should not be making or for the renekton player to be much more skilled than his/her opponent (not an even matchup in terms of player skill; the renekton player is better whether playing renekton or any other champ). If we compare renekton's ability to bully and snowball early to the potential of mid and late game carries such as jax, irelia, fiora, etc., the latter have 0 pressure to win lane and have much more carry potential late game. They can make many more mistakes in mid-late and late game 1v1's and STILL win the duel while renekton cannot say the same early game if he messes up - unless as I said before, the opponent is just way less skilled than him/her. This shouldn't be the case. Either renekton needs equal opportunity to punish the late game carry if they mess up late game, or the equal lee-way to make a minor mistake and still win early that the late game carry has. Thus my 2 proposals - buffing early game or buffing late game. The safety with which many champs can farm coupled with their mobility and SUSTAIN (fiora passive and q, darius q, illaoi q & w, yorick q) is too much to allow them to be properly bullied if they are of equal skill to their opponent - especially if they get minor jungle help at the right time. If they can drop 5-15 cs behind in laning, get their 1 or 2 items, and then just win the 1v1, there is no point to picking renekton other than that you like the champ. Renekton used to bully by trading at least equally in damage early and then SUSTAINING himself while others lacked the ability to match his sustain - no longer is this the case. Other champs can actually match or exceed his damage while outmatching his sustain before real items are completed. Kinda stupid considering he is supposed to be an early game bully. Scaling and survivability - renekton's base stats scale worse than pretty much every duelist plus he makes less use of his items than other champs. This means he is doubly screwed late game at even items and levels. If we look at shyvana and nasus most recent updates (quite awhile ago now), they got some hp added to their ult - not as much as renekton, but not much less in nasus's case. Free hp just for pressing r used to be the exclusive right of renekton and lulu. So if these champs can get hp AND resistances, why can't renekton get resistances too? Or look at warwick and galio who offer straight up % damage reduction in addition to what their items offer. If you consider option 2 - resistances on his ult - it actually makes a ton of sense for both solo queue and pro play. In the pro scene, you see a renekton who is NOT way ahead from the early game go into a teamfight with more hp than the enemy tank and equal resistance stats from items, yet the renekton melts like butter while the enemy tank seems to live for an eternity. Adding resistances to his ult would make him SITUATIONALLY tanky and add more strategy to WHEN he ults. Same for dueling enemies 1v1 in mid-late game. Furthermore, if the resistances scaled off his BONUS resistances, renekton would only benefit by building tanky RESISTANCE items - making him choose between damage or durability rather than giving him free reign to stack 3+ damage items and rely on ult alone to get the benefit of resistances. Because these would be tied to when he uses his ult, he would be situationally tanky and have LARGE windows of opportunity for his enemies to exploit his ult being down - even allowing them to bait it out, then reengage when his ult is down.
In short, renekton lacks the same ability and lee-way to bully that other champs who outscale him gain. He gets disgustingly outscaled to the point that he is laughable in pro play if he didn't snowball early game. Two options exist for rectifying this: buffing his early game to give him comparable bully potential and lee-way in the early game or making him scale more comparably to other bruisers/duelists. The proposed option to give him better scaling would not make him broken early game while still giving him better scaling to transition into a teamfighting champ with respectable survivability. It would ADD rather than remove strategic play to the champ too. In all seriousness, I hope you (Riot) take these ideas into consideration.
