Autofill empowers people to troll.

I'll go ahead and say this now so someone doesn't bring it up later: I personally don't care if I get autofilled, I can play whatever role. I've learned at least two champions to play at each role. Getting autofilled is not a big deal to me.

What is a big deal to me is that people who do get autofilled typically do not. Even worse people who do end up getting autofilled have terrible attitudes about getting autofilled. This leads to one of three things:

  1. They don't take it seriously and troll. "O I GOT AUTOFILLED TO JG?? BUT I DUNNO HOW TO JANGLE. IMMA PICK EZREAL JUNGLE EVEN THO I DUNNO HOW TO PLAY EZREAL OR JUNGLE AND RUIN THE GAME FOR EVERYONE ELSE I AM PLAYING WITH"

  2. They intentionally play bad just to spite the autofill system. "FK RIOT. FK AUTOFILL. I GOT FILLED TO SUPPORT BUT I WANNA PLAY MID, SO ILL GO MID ANYWAYS.

  3. The person who got autofilled doesn't know how to play that role well and ends up playing terribly which puts the rest of the team in a foul mood. This doesn't particularly bother me. But I've seen it really bother other people, to the point where they flame and complain and sometimes just quit all together.

None of these situations is enjoyable for anyone who has to play with these people. Great, now you have to wait at least twenty minutes to surrender, and that twenty minute wait time is not at all enjoyable when your team does not stand a chance of winning at all. The team attitude is terrible from the get go, and you're essentially playing a man down (which occasionally means the other team is playing a man up).

Ever since Riot added autofill I am definitely getting into games more often, but the quality of games I'm playing has declined tremendously. Honestly, I would rather wait the 5 extra minutes to get into a game where every one is at least reasonably happy with the role they got at the champion select screen. I'd rather wait the 10 more minutes to know that, "Hey everyone here got a role they are at least semi-familiar with". That puts everyone in a better mood in champ select, which helps put everyone in a better mood in the actual game. I don't think there is much of an argument against

Riot definitely overestimated the community when they enabled autofill. I think more often than not being autofilled, especially in ranked, gives people a motivation to not care as much, try as hard, and treat their teammates like garbage.

I'd really like to see Riot revert back to not having autofill, at least for ranked. This is coming from someone who absolutely hates long queue times. But as much as I hate long queue timers I'd rather have a higher quality gameplay experience, with a generally improved team mood during champion select over shorter queue times.
