@Riot Can We Stop Making New Champions and Reworks Have Invulnerabilities
I suppose this thread is really spawned by the new Taric rework being released. As the title says, could we please stop adding essentially uncounterable "safety switch" type abilities to new champions? What I'm referring to are things like Ekko ult or Bard ult, that, while interesting and providing unique strategies to the user, create the feeling of being cheated by the opponent.
Now I'm not here to say that these abilities have no counterplay, but they FEEL much worse to play against than other older variants. furthermore, there are substantially MORE of them being released recently than ever before in the champion pool.
New vs Old:
In the past 1-1.5 years Riot has released seven of these abilities (including new Taric) that seem to bring much less thought to the user's side than to those they are against.
's reworked w,
's ult,

While individually, none of these abilities are particularly egregious or harmful to the game environment, it seems like Riot is creating too much of a "League of Safety" mindset in their new releases. It seems like the default way to make a character "supportive" or "team- oriented" in modern releases is to allow them to literally stop champions from dying. It just feels strange for so many new champions to have what amounts to, in many cases, a "Get-out-of-jail-free card" for either themselves, in the case of Ekko and Fiora, or parts, if not all of their team, in the cases of Kalista, Bard, Kindred, Tahm and Taric. The main problem with this, in my eyes, is that in releasing so many champions with these abilities in their kits, you are effectively crowding out champions or team comps that don't include these champions, because the ability to undeniably remove someone from danger for any period is in almost any case too influential to pass up.
In comparison to these abilities being recently released are the similar abilities on older champions.
's ult,
's ult,
's ult,
's ult,
's w, and
's e.
The most similar to modern releases are Kayle's ult and Elise's e, which function like a single target Taric ult, and Kindred ult, respectively. However, the most notable aspects of these are their focus on more precise use and drawbacks to the user. Alistar, while he gets much stronger, isn't actually invulnerable, and must time his ult properly to remove CC. Kayle can either protect herself as a carry, or use it to defend someone else, not both. Tryndamere can effectively Kindred ult himself, but not the entire team. Zilean's targets aren't invulnerable, they still die and, without proper team coordination, die again. Vlad takes damage for his invulnerability. Elise loses the opportunity for gap closing later in the fight. While Bard ult and Kindred ult do incorporate some amount of strategy in their casting, they have one thing that makes them seem more overbearing than older versions of essentially the same thing: AOE. Its not that they are unbalanced or even unfair. It just feels significantly worse to play against newer champions AOE invulnerabilities than say
's ult, which, in a way, provides similar utility to a teamcomp, but still makes the enemy feel like they are in control to some extent over the fate of a fight.
Now, this has turned into somewhat of a rant and maybe my purpose isn't super clear so I'll try to make the arguement a bit more clear here: I'm not saying to remove or even necessarily change the current iterations of invulnerability type abilities. What I am saying is to aknowledge the amount of invulnerability being thrust into the game at an alarming rate (more in the last year than before that in total), understand that in the cases of many of these champs it inadvertently becomes their central contribution to a team composition and that AOE invulnerabilities are really something incredibly powerful when used correctly, and finally to please reconsider using invulnerability as a way of offering safety to champion releases in the near future. As it is, with the notable exception of Tryndamere, all of the champions with invulnerability of some sort I've mentioned in this thread are currently or recently have been viable and meta competitive picks due to the incredible amount of options and risk vs reward that these abilities bring.
(Noticed I forgot the infamous
E in my paragraphs above, not intentional, but would more categorize him with the old champions in that his invulnerability can be frustration, but unlike Ekko it has very clear workarounds, that have potential to be exploited as opposed to taking him out of harms way all together in some cases)
If anyone actually takes the time to read this thing the whole way through, thanks so much! If you agree or disagree, please comment below, as I'd love to here why!
How on earth are you supposed to kill anyone with his ultimate in this day and age? They should seriously consider giving him some compensation, like true damage on the ability itself or even a way to bypass invincibility frames.
