Does Galio's ult need a tweek?
I think we can all agree that Galio is a very underplayed champion. I believe the reason stems from his ult. Its a very peculiar case because his ult is in one regard extremely strong and yet at the same time, very unreliable in another. This of course makes balancing it difficult since one can easily overshoot and push it into the realm of "OP" or utter obscurity. I don't proclaim to have the answer, but here are my suggestions.
First issue I see with Galio's ult is its unusual reliance on "flash". Now it certainly isn't new for a champion's ult to benefit from this summoner spell. Amumu flash ult, Annie flash ult are just the first to come to mind, the list goes on. But in all those instances "flash" isn't so much necessary as it simply improves the ult. For instance, Amumu have his Q to use as a gap closer. Annie on the other hand doesn't need to be right in the middle of the enemies for her ult to be effective. This is why Amumu and Annie can use their ult more often and to greater effect than Galio. When playing Galio it often feels like his ult have two sets of cooldowns. One for the actual ult, the other for flash. Though you can certainly use his ult when flash is down its not nearly as effective, ESPECIALLY if your trying to use it as a initiator for team fights. So should we think about giving Galio a gap closer? Perhaps a short one. Maybe we can change his E to have a second activation. so that when he hits an enemy with his wind, he can do a short dash towards them. This would fit thematically since Galio is a winged melee champion. Above is just a suggestion, I'm sure there are many other options available for us. But the bottom line is : I believe Galio's ult could benefit from a more reliable gap closer than just "flash", this would make him a more satisfying champion to use and thus improve his popularity.
The Second major issue with Galio's ult is how its so easily interrupted by CCs, often deliberate by the enemy team but some times by accident. Nautilus for instance can completely NEGATE Galio's ult with his passive. Now maybe its just me, but I think having a champion's 120 sec (at max level, could be longer) cooldown ultimate skill be completely negated by another champion's passive ability is COMPLETELY unbalanced. And Nautilus is not the only one who can do this. A Xin Zhao with his Q active or perhaps a Leona with her Q active or Udyr with his E etc etc. (all of them most likely intended for other targets) could also negate Galio's ult. This kind of counter is not healthy for league in my opinion, it takes no skill to utterly negate another champion's single most defining ability. I think there should be ways to cancel Galio's ult. But not by accidents like examples I've listed above. My suggestion would be to make Galio's ult immune to CCs FROM champions who are within the ult "circle" when the ult was started. Confused? let me clarify with Nautilus as an example. A nautilus who skillfully dodged, or was careful with his positioning in team fight so as to not be hit by Galio's ult, could then walk into galio's ult to interupt his channel with his passive stun. This would be totally fair, it shows skill, and I would totally respect that. BUT, a Nautilus who who is fairly ulted by Galio could not passively stun Galio out of his channel because Galio would be immune to CCs from him. I think this makes galio's ult more viable for serious play and at the same time leave enough room for counter play in a way that rewards enemy skill rather than dumb luck.
- style gap closer to his ult, where he flies up into the air, pauses briefly and displays where his ult will land, and then flies to that location and starts the ult there. That seems like it might be the right kind of idea - it lets him initiate from range, but adds counterplay by giving his opponents a brief warning, which flash-ult doesn't do.
