Can someone explain to me why people play champions in ranked that they are not good at?

This is kinda just a rant after a ranked game that i had but hear me out.

I get that some people enjoy champs that they are not good at. I enjoy playing vayne, but am i good at her? Hell no. She's fun and i enjoy playing it in normals some times but that's about it, i wouldn't dare bring it out in ranked until i feel confident enough to.

So why do people insist on playing champions in ranked that they know they are not good at? In my most recent game i had a yasuo and a rek'sai. I thought nothing of it at first, but as we go into the game they both ending up feeding. That's not even my problem, everyone has bad games and shouldn't be flamed for one poor performance. The issue is that after the game i checked their OP.GG's just to have a look. The yasuo, has played 48 games, and had a 27% win rate, meaning he won about 13 of those 48 games. The Rek'sai only had 9 games, and a 33% win rate, meaning he has only won 3 of those 9 games.

My question is this; why bring champions into ranked that you know you can't play to a good standard? and why keep trying to play it in ranked rather than practice it in normals?

Rant over. I'm open to hearing your thoughts on the situation and what you think.

some people just don't care about winning.

Maybe because the champion could fit the team comp very well, I did it once when I played Zilean Mid for the first time to fit into a Sivir comp, but I couldn't land a double bomb all game. Lets say i learned my lesson though.

Season 6 is all about dumbing down ranked until it doesn't mean anything. So what is the difference?

A couple random possibilities come to mind (none of which may apply to your particular situation):

  • They may not pay attention to their history and win rates and incorrectly think they only lose on this champ "because the rest of the team fed"
  • They may have had a bad ranked run, taken it to normals and had a good run, so they feel it is ok to bring back to ranked. (If you can only play positive rate champions, how do you ever bring one back if you do legitimately improve it.)
  • They may have seen a change in a patch that makes them feel the champ should now be better than when they last played them.
  • I wouldn't consider win rate on a champ to be meaningful until 20 games minimum, maybe more. (So I wouldn't blame the Rek'sai in your story too much.)
