Super simple question for anyone at Riot.

In regards to damage over time effects like poison, or AOE damage areas like Karthus' Defile, why isn't the damage received at a faster rate than per second? Something like a tenth of a second would be more visually pleasing I would think. Just wondering why though.

Most DoTs tick every .5 secs.

Practicality. It's easier for both the aggressor and the attacked to gauge where their health will end up after a tic of poison and judge their next actions off of that if it's lumped together into 1/2 sec instead of 1/10. Otherwise it would just look like anti-regen.

If it ticked that often, they would probably have to reevaluate Liandry's Torment.

Most DoTs display their damage per second but tick every 0.25 or 0.5 sec.

The fastest ticking system is on every quarter-second, and, actually, a lot of DoTs base on every half-second. I believe Viktor's ultimate ticks at quarter-seconds.

If it ticked that often, they would probably have to reevaluate Liandry's Torment.

I'm pretty sure they figured out how to fix that problem back with Teemo. All it takes is making sure the DoT keeps track of its own, current lifespan so that it ticks damage on its own timer instead of the proccing DoT's timer.
